Many people have experimented with plastic, 5 gallon buckets.

If I were you, I'd try to go one of two directions. (Very random ideas, humidity and sterility can be a problem in some cases)
1. As you write, search for something reusable. A thick plastic pipe - like a sewer pipe - with holes in it could be used. Similarly any plastic container with suitable geometry would do. Actually I'm going to try to fruit various edibles in simple plastic boxes with either lids or tents made of plastic foil.
2. Use something that you would discard anyway, or something that decomposes: strong paper/cardboard (never tried, the substrate might dry out quickly, or decompose very fast), biodegradable plastic bags, boxes made from wood scraps/branches tied together with hemp fiber strings, even loosely woven fruiting baskets from thin wood branches.

many have grown oysters in baskets with open design, or boxes of similar type which can all be cleaned and reused. if you like the round "log-type" or tube type approach. maybe an open weave plastic net would serve you well. many green ideas to think about.

Hands down 5 gallon buckets are the best reusable container.
Easy to obtain, can reuse MANY times, can stack 4 buckets high, and it makes it very easy to move lots a substrate around at once! Put holes in the sides, cover with paper tape and the will fruit outdoors in a uncontrolled environment no problem!

Oyster myc is incredible and eats almost anything. I just used a 12 pack cardboard beer box filled with cardboard & paper. inoculated 2 weeks ago and its already peeking through.

5 gallon buckets for sure. Soak for ten minuted in 2% bleach solution first and between batches especially around the to where there are lots of places for contamination to hide.

Check restaurants. They usually get rid of plastic buckets/bins/boxes all the time with there ingredient shipments. I got a bunch of nice plastic trays and 4ish gal buckets with lids from a local restaurant. (and they get em weekly so I have a never ending supply)
Just go in and ask, or check by the dumpsters.

Just about any non-porous container is great for a reusable cropping container. Plastic tubing is sweet for retaining moisture content and optimizing cluster formation but when the substrate is spent, I have found that cleaning a flimsy bag takes a bit of time. This is fine for those that want to cultivate for personal consumption but on the commercial side, not so time efficient.
Crate-like containers are better for reusing. They are easier to scrub with a bristle brush and solution than thin polyethylene.

I've been looking to buy these for ages but the prices are always outrageous (well, usually it's the shipping costs). Do you have a price on these?

it was like 900 bucks for a pallet. I didnt talk about shipping because they just throw it on a boat and you do the rest.
