now i dont think it has enough gain. I think im just gojng to have to get a mesa mark V. If that doesnt satisfy me, then i should just play acoustic guitar.

I don't know what kind of music you play, but I've always enjoyed Mesa or Orange amps. Peavey 6505 is nice if you want something crunchier.

Yeah, the difference between low-volume and 10 is amazing. I hated my Orange passionately. I regretted the $2000 I spent on it. Then I got to turn it up, finally. I almost regret selling it, it was a beautiful amp. Traditionally British, dirty, nasty rock sound, with the fattest and warmest clean tone.
It just wasn't versatile enough for me when I started playing exclusively on 8-string guitars, though. The low Bb and Eb strings were almost entirely lost I picked up a 6505 after I got rid of the Orange.

ever try out a G.K. or a classic Ampeg?? you know with the modern technology all you need is a high quality natural sounding amp/pre-amp and a digital emulator and you can program in any amp/speaker combo that has ever been mapped. want to sound like a marshal 4-10? poof you got it! want to sound like a classic VOX? want to sound like a Fender twin-verb? poof you got it! Want to sound like a Carvin stack? you'll still need the Carvin stack... nothing sounds quite like that.
you might just play accoustic anyways, once the tinnitus kicks in it won't matter much which amp you play...

Yeah, I've played around with it, don't own personally. Guitar's secondary for me though, I don't know everything about amp technology.

Either get a mic that puts out more electricity, or get/make a preamp.

Hey OP,
what are you plugging into said amp and how do you intend to wail upon it? I.e.- what instrument, what style of music, what effects if any, favorite tone variety etc....
knowing a few things would help us phreaks make more accurate and less useless banter

Well if it's an awesome amp, I think that you aren't putting enough signal into it.

no its just not not a high gain amp. I have to get it too loud to get the grit I want. Its plenty loud.

maybe your pickup magnets have died of dysentery?? I dunno... you say "it's not a high gain amp" and yet you have to get it "too loud" to get distortion??
Hmmmm.... you keep using that word. I do not think it means, what it is you think it means.
you are turning your amp waaaaaaay up and it's not distorting at all?? Well sucker, good job... money well spent. it's a decent amplifier after all. You see, signal distortion is considered bad by engineers who specialize in amplifier design. So they do everything they can to get a input of a certain impedance to amplify many thousands of times it's original volume (milliwatts to killowatts) WITHOUT DISTORTING! So you turn it up and it sounds clean? WOW! Nice amp!
so you want some extra fat sound? You need to overdrive the pre-amp... you've heard of "overdrive" distortion... yes that is an actual technical term not just the name of a stomp-box, a terrible Steven King movie, and a feature on the gear-box of your grandma's Volvo 242. pre-amp overdrive is what you get when the input signal is too strong and some distortion occurs.
So you want more overdrive? Start out by making absolutely sure your pickups are all properly working or the device (keyboards, sequencers, synths, etc) have a compatible output for your amp. If your guitar has active pickups, maybe the 9v battery inside your guitar is getting tired? You could cut your pickguard for a blade type humbucker-- those typically rip... but dont butcher a G&L, that would make the gods of rock very angry.
other stuff you can do to fatten your tone, run a sonic expander in-line (like a limiter-expander-compressor), run an expanded EQ,
I'd guess if you can't get some warm sounds out of almost any amp that sound good then maybe the problem is internal and has nothing to do with the amp
