Psilocybe cyanescens cultivation
    #1764912 - 07/31/03 01:54 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

From "Psilocybe Mushrooms and their Allies", 1978, pg. 119:

"Recent experimentation with Psilocybe cyanescens has proven that it can be fruited artificially on a mixture of wood chips and composted manure."

Manure to provide actynomycetes?
Who?s gonna try this?

(Comment:)

Since it can't really colonize it wouldn't it be a contamination problem? I guess it could certainly promote fruiting, but what will get ahold of the poo? I know it's composted, but the actinos flourish at higher heats than incubation, so wouldn't something else be likely to take hold?

What about somehow using a bit of soil and crap found next to a rhododendrons plant? Think that might be benificial? I don't think you're supposed to case them, so maybe just put it underneath the colonized woodchips? Any ideas?

It can be fruited on just woodchips, too. It's an interesting question what promotes the fruiting. Some bacteria should be benificial, too.

You mean the dung? I?m nearly completely sure Psilocybe cyanescnes will colonize dung, siince it?s a woodlovers(like shiitake)readily colonize shredded straw, which isn?t far away from the dung.

I'm sure it would. It's a very agressive colonizer and I saw it taking over contaminants without problems.
However the quote you provided doesn't say that the dung was not sterilized. I guess they sterilized or at least pasteurized it, so they probably killed actinomycetes.
I will make some experiments with different substrates. Sterilized, pasteurized, fermented ...

Subaeruginosa which is nearly identical to cyanescens readily colonises and is reported to fruit directly off manure mixed with wood chips. Im sure it would work, but I dont think it would provide anything that would inprove fruiting.
Subearuginosa spread to many areas of Australia via manure.

I would first like to know where to get the spores. Are they available? I haven't looked in a long time.

Me too; I've been unable to find P.Cyanescens or P. Baeocystis spores.

I'd like to give it a go on Fermented dung and straw, i think
I'll stick to 10 straw to 1 dung and see how well it colonises
a mycobag or 2, i might try Subas and azures along side.

Is anyone going to try it on pasteurised substrate?

There should be no real problems as dung contains loads
of cellulose and the actynomycetes dead or alive seem to
help things along :-)

i have that book here with me , even underlined that sentence god knows how many years ago . So if i understand well it could also be applied to the azures as well ? looks promising though ! thanks for reminding

Paid -- you mean using the straw/dung as a fruiting substrate or spawn? I always thought they were supposed to be colonized using a wood-based media like a sawdust/bran mixture???? Is selectivity a contam. problem when using something like straw?
________

I think I'm going to start my first (indoor) Azure project in like a month or so.... There are a lot of rhododendron plants around here.... you think I could use something around it to help the fruiting???

I think the climate in MA might be way too harsh to grow them outdoors.... Anyone?

Thanks,

'you think I could use something around it to help the fruiting???'
Yeah try them outdoors - even if you manage to fruit them indoors, they wont perform as well as in a good outdoor bed...

Well I guess that brings me back to my other question -- you don't think the weather is too harsh in Northeast USA? The weather does strange things here -- it could be like 90 degrees one day and then drop to 30, or the other way around. It gets cold fast, too, so there isn't much of a time where it just stays around 50 -- I don't even think a whole month.

I'm trying a mini scale experiment in fruiting of azure (Hammond strain). Spawning in reishi mycobag. Fruiting inside an expensive setup with a mini fridge with lots of fresh air exchange, 5.0 UVB light , floro, 50/50 pasteurized soil manure mix casing layer and a small thin piece of fresh clean grass carpet cut in a square.

Hopefully it will fruit. Then I can take prints and isolate the best fruit body.
And do the whole print after print thing. Imagine 4th gen indoor azure hammond prints . They might adapt to indoor conditions and fruit better if isolated indoors.

Then I will share all my 4th gen indoor prints with select individuals at the shroomery.

Why are you casing it? I didn't think you were supposed to case azures. If you can that would solve the humidity problems I'm anticipating (I don't have a humidifier.)
