Adopting the Mentally Challenged
    #17484240 - 01/02/13 01:20 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone here ever heard of getting paid to adopt a mentally challenged person?

The people I work with insist that it pays 60-70 thousand a year.

It seems logical to me considering that some of the individuals I have been around need a staff member around all day.

I think it would be a full time job, which is why it should pay.

I have not able to find any information through google so far.

I know someone who was a foster parent and also did this, im not sure how much she got paid.

its more than a full time job, its tough.

not only is it 24/7 but the kids are usually have problems and are special needs so its twice as hard as normal kids.

She adoped one herion baby and one fetal alcohol baby.

it was not easy for her and she was a pro... i saw it all because she lived across the street from me and i used to go play with the kids over there when i was young. .

I wonder what it costs for a year's supply of hay and a pitchfork.

Its nice that you want to do this XUL. It has to pay a lot, but I'm sure you need training and licenses.

If you ever end up doing it though, let me know, I've been looking for a new home.

I imagine rates of pay vary dramatically from state to state.

I started at $20/hour when I did this but there was a weekly salary cap at $1200. I never usually worked over the 60~ hours so there was never a significant amount of money lost. This was five years ago and in NY, in case that matters.

The job requirements were:

CPR/First aid certified
Completed emergency responder training
At least 2 semesters of adolescent development that had to include an abnormal psych and developmental issues course.
1 year work experience in a group home setting

Generally speaking, gigs like this are high paying but they're high paying for a reason. You essentially become the child's parent. It's a difficult, stressful and seemingly never ending job. That being said, it's also incredibly fulfilling if your heart is in the right spot. If it's just about money, you may want to look elsewhere.

You adopted a person? Or did you work in a group home?

Right now it is just an idea.

I have been working the the mentally challenged for about four or five years and I want to stay in this line of work because I love it. But even love can be hindered by financial issues. I could not work in a group home making 12 dollars an hour forever. Currently I am working towards my BSN and I hope that can come into play. My current company has triage nurses and that could be a possibility too.

I've done both but what I was describing above was the "adopt". I had my buddy from 6am until 8pm everyday. Every once in awhile, an overnight stay would be needed and during that time I was paid an "overnight salary" which was half of what I made during the day. This only happened maybe six times throughout one year.

Maybe I read your post wrong. Are you talking about a full on adoption?

Good luck with your BSN! What's your ideal job in the field?

Reread your post and I do think I misinterpreted it. As far as full on adoption goes, I have no idea. It's not something I would do unless I was looking for a child at the time. That's a huge commitment regardless of money.

I think it's a really admirable idea though.

I want to stay in my current field, with the mentally challenged. The only opening I can imagine is a triage nurse, like the ones my current company has. Although I will not take the job unless there is possibility for promotion, maybe into a head triage nurse or something like that.

I wouldn't adopt,

but I do volunteer to help mentally handicapped children/teens get into sports/activities/hobbies.

Whatever the case may be.

In fact I'm taking a group of 15 mentally handicapped kids to NC for a few days to teach them how to ski/snowboard.

It's a rewarding experience, but I don't think I could ever adopt

This is how I feel. Being the main caretaker for my little man was such an amazing experience but I am so not ready to be a parent and that's obviously what you sign up for by adopting. I'm not against the idea of adoption, regardless of any issues, but it would have to be years from now when I'm ready to have a family.

My mother used to teach special ed, besides being a nurse i don't think you could "adopt" a kid per se and get paid for it.
