Christianity or Maynard?
    #1741454 - 07/23/03 02:01 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I just found an interview with Maynard Keenan from Tool, and I like everything that he said and relate to it..
Now, what do all of you think has the better message (to you, which one do you most identify with and find truth in?), TOOL, or The Bible? Please read the interview and listen to what he says, if you are not already familiar with what theire message is. Not to mention that the Bible doesn't have a fucking sweet soundtrack that helps deliver the message....
Peace.

a good friend of mine is always preaching the maynard gospel to me, and I have to admit, it'd be fun tripping with those guys.  they're thoughtful.  but you have to remember, it's just a band.  they don't want to be worshiped.

there's this cool post on www.tooband.com where keenan talks about eating his acid collection on hoffmans b-day.

Is there anything to the "Maynard Gospel" besides talking about Keenan's philosophical views?

I'm not talking about worshipping them, or anything, I'm just talking about their ideals. Finding truth in them, adopting them, and applying it in our life. We'd be better off than by adopting Christianity's ideals.

There is a lot to the "Maynard Gospel"... artwork, etc.
Gotta go, though, I'll add more when I'm back home in a few hours..
Peace.

Ah.  Well, in everything I've read about Maynard, he sounds like just a normal guy who's eyes are opened, and who has some good ideas - like us

But I know what you mean, I agree with some/a lot of what he says.

"People talk about dolphins and whales being more evolved, because they
have a better breathing element. If you do meditation, you understand
the idea of the Prana, breathing in light through the pineal gland. In
mythology, there's talk about how people used to breathe that way, but
over time, they began to breathe more through the mouth. That's the
connection that we've forgotten."

you figure it out.

I'm not proposing Maynard as a replacement for religion (hehe, quite the funny statement, what i just said, if you read it closely, but anyways); he has a man who has the power to get his ideas out there.
What I am wondering, is if all of you would rather life life in accordance to his views and beliefs, or in Christianity's views and beliefs.
This is basically a poll, I'm just wondering what everyone's choice would be, and why (if you had to go one or the other, no in between or etc).
Just curious on your thoughts...
Peace.

tool, of course.

their music has changed my life to the extent the bible would to a born again christian, only i feel in a much better way.

but, you cannot compare the two. the bible is pointless compared to the content of tools music. they're on a totally different level..

edit; excellent interview. maynard is able to articulate exactly the things i think/feel to the extent it is chilling.

have you seen the one from much music? its not nearly as long but its pretty interesting.. im sure you can google up a transcript.

Not only that, but he does it so cooly, too... He doesn't need a thousand words to make his point on the subject. At first I was thinking that it would be cool to have him here on Spirituality and Philosophy, to share his insight and point of view, but now I realize he is too far above it all, to even post here, for him it would be pointless, as he's in a much, much, higher place (although I don't really can't know if he'd post here or not, it might interest him enough to do so)
I'll look around for that interview, too. (glad to say I am wearing a TOOL shirt right now, but that's just me praising myself)
Peace.

it's the fact that he plainly uses the term "Mythology" and then speaks of the concept as if it is fact.
also the stupid shit about dolphins.

i think he'd have a lot to say, if he felt like talking about it.
i wouldnt say hes 'higher' or 'above' exactly. but he certainly is somewhere different.. like hes already been through all the stuff we're talking about and shit here...

i'd pay to hear him talk about random shit, hes so articulate and has an incredibly interesting view on things.

albino jesus; i doubt he meant it as fact. im not getting what you dont understand about the concept hes talking about, though.

I also hold this in my heart, and I totally respect and will eventually take part in this sacred connection (from the side Maynard experiences). The connection between the band and the fans, through the music, the shared experiences, the similar state of mind (music connects with people of similar thought), it is like a conversation of feelings, "a connection" (this is what my mind automatically wanted to put down, i guess Maynard chose that word for a purpose).
I remember watching a Metallica video, and Kirk is talking about how a fan came up to him the other day and started talking to him. The fan was saying how that, while they were playing, he felt this energy being exchanged, being passed back and forth from the fans to the band, and they'd receive it and channel back through their instruments, it it'd continue circling. Then Kirk added, "I shouldn't neglect to say that he also told me he was on acid."
My second concert was Mudvayne and IN FLAMES (I made a post about it actually, searchinnnggg.........(seek and destroy! hehe), ahh.. here it is, check it out. very interesting
It goes along with the whole connection thing (now that I think of it, Mudvayne's singer thanked us repeatedly for allowing them to build connections and spread some energy).
This, I hold in one of the most sacred regards, and find a lot of meaning in. This is very valuable to me.
Peace.

A lot can be learned from the lyrics, too. I found one song that I thought I should post on here, considering the subject of this post. Here goes:

Eulogy
He had alot to say. He had alot of nothing to say. We'll miss him. So long. We wish you well. You told us how you weren't afraid to die. Well then, so long. Don't cry. Or feel too down. Not all martyrs see divinity. But at least you tried. Standing above the crowd he had a voice that was strong and loud. We'll miss him. Ranting and pointing his finger at everything but his heart. We'll miss him. No way to recall what it was that you had said to me, Like I care at all. So loud. You sure could yell. You took a stand on every little thing and so loud. Standing above the crowd, he had a voice so strong and loud and I swallowed his fa?ade cuz I'm so eager to identify with someone above the ground, someone who seemed to feel the same, someone prepared to lead the way, with someone who would die for me. Will you? Will you now? Would you die for me? Don't you fuckin' lie. Don't you step out of line. Don't you fuckin lie. You've claimed all this time that you would die for me. Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy? You had alot to say. You had alot of nothing to say. Come down. Get off your fuckin cross. We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr. To ascend you must die. You must be crucified for your sins and your lies. Goodbye...

First of all I'd like to say that it's no surprise to see so many Tool fans here at the Shroomery. It's great!

That was a great interview, I haven't read that one before.

Maynard is a brilliant person, and he is reaching out to a lot of people, doing some very beautiful work. Maynard has done a hell of a lot more good than Christianity has ever done, so there is no question.

But I won't say I'm a follower of his, because I'm not a follower of anyone, all I can say is that I relate to many of his messages and am grateful that I can enjoy them through his incredible music.

And damn Tool knows how to put on a show!
