It really depends on how you lay down your patches.
All you need is about a 1/2 layer of perlite,
a 1/4" layer of casing soil on top of that.
Then, the next part will really determine your depth. How thick of substrate you lay down. You can lay whole 1/2 pint jars down, those are roughly about 3" -3 1/2" thick, but you can cut them in 1/2 or in 1/3d's and lay down a larger, but less depth of a patch. Then just lay a 1/2" layer of casing soil on that. If you lay down whole cakes, try and use at least a 3/4" casing layer, as the mushrooms will grow larger and need the extra 1/4" of casing soil to support there weight.

What happens when you use larger patches, with less of a substrate depth, you get a lot of mushrooms on your first flush, and a few on your second, and by then the patch is usually spent. With the thicker substrate layer, you'll get larger mushrooms, in less of a space, and you get larger 2nd,3rd,4th flushes.

Does the perlite provide enough humidity when using the outdoor tek (with greenhouse)???

Thanks Ryche. Good point torsades. I think it depends on how humid your local environment is. 90% or above is fine. I've heard some people say you don't need it. I've got one right now with a g-house. The other has no g-house, just a little perlite in the bottom beneath the casing. I'll put an update after this weekend. Do a forum search for outdoor teks.
