TiT incubation chamber sumbersible heater question.
    #17237792 - 11/17/12 09:34 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I am setting up a "tub in tub" incubator, I recently visited walmart and to my surprise, they didn't have the lower sized heater in stock, only the 10-30 gallon one. I purchased it and saved the receipt, knowing I can always return it.

My question is, will using a 10-30 gallon aquarium water heater with less than 10 gallons be a hazard? Or will it simply spend less time heating, and not cause any serious hazards?

I could always modify it to fit a few more gallons by raising the top tub up a little bit, but I'm more concerned about the hazards that could arise.

Anyone with experience of how they work or testimonials of people with the same circumstance are more than appreciated, thanks.

first off incubation isnt necessary, but if you must build one you need to buy a thermostat and place the probe in the tub with your jars, and plug aquarium heater into the thermostat

or you could just put them on a shelf and not worry about building one which is the easiest way to do it.

and you wouldnt have to worry about a fire when your not home from a faulty aquarium heater

Well it's getting cold, and I don't want to have to run my heater all the time just for jars.

My question is more aimed at the safety of it, I've gone without many times in the past but I notice that in the winter months the jars slow down like crazy.

Also my aquarium heater is automated and sets itself at 78 degrees, so there will be no need for a thermostat or anything.

It means that it can heat up to 30 gallons of water.  As long as it is submerged and not able to touch your inner tub, you are fine.

Wal-Mart aquarium heaters are cheap.  You get what you pay for.  If you are going to make a TiT, invest some money and go to a pet store and get a true heater.  The Pro Heat series are extremely reliable.  They are made of titanium, not glass, and are very durable.

just because the water temp is 78, doesnt mean the air in your incubator is 78.  a thermostat is recommended to monitor the air in your incubator and your aquarium running off of that

and there is obviously dial on thermostat to control temp, this IMO would be the most efficient way if you absolutely think you need one
