Funeral Sandwiches
    #17210581 - 11/12/12 11:48 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I made some of these today and they came out so bomb and it doesn't require that many ingredients.

Heres the recipe for anyone wanting to make some themselves.

The other day I was browsing one of my favorite forums and found this recipe (which I changed just a bit), which was being raved about, just in time for Henry's first birthday party. It sounded perfect for a gathering of people because you make it ahead, pop it in for 20 minutes, and it also makes quite a bit. Needless to say, the guests loved them and almost everyone wants the recipe. So, folks, here you go!

{Funeral Sandwiches}
1 package of King's Hawaiian Rolls
1/2-1 lb. good ham deli meat
Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
1/2 c. butter, melted
3 T. worcheshire sauce
2 T. mustard
2 T. brown sugar
dash of onion powder

METHOD:
1. Cut the rolls in half and line the bottom of a baking pan with the bottoms of the rolls. Layer the ham slices, then cheese and place the top half back on.

2. Mix together the butter, worcheshire, mustard, brown sugar and onion powder. Pour the whole works over the buns, drenching each one. Cover tightly and marinade anywhere from 4-24 hours.

3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 15 minutes, uncovered,or until cheese is melted and bun tops are a bit golden.

Looks "killer" ... never underestimate the power of a King's Hawaiian roll.

But seriously, why are these called Funeral Sandwiches?

ham and cheese sandwicdh. Can't go wrong with that. Except you put the butter on the top.

Y'see, butter goes inside the bread, so your fingers don't get sticky.

at first I thought those were covered in gravy and I thought that they were genius.  Then I read it was butter over Hawaiian rolls and still I thought...  Genius!

Maybe they are called funeral sandwiches,  because they are easy to make and a pretty likeable food, so people give them to families when they have a death.  That's what people do around here, if a friend has a relative die, they make food for the family, so they don't have to worry about cooking and stuff during the grieving/busy period of the funeral and visitations.

Looks good, looks like something they would serve in the basement social area of a church for the post funeral lunch.
