Do you have an accent? 1

Today I was talking to a buddy about accents today, and he confirmed that where we live (missouri/illinois border) has an accent. We think that we have a no accent, but people have told us that we sound like we have a country accent. I do pick up on certain ways I say things, a big one being that I add "r" into a lot of words like.

Do any of you have an accent? If you don't, you're in denial, because everyone has one, except people on tv. Describe it too.

Apparently people from the vicinity of Chicago sound nasally. I dunno. Myself and the people around me don't sound very nasally to me.

I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

This is all objective, EVERYONE has an accent. If I go somewhere on the east coast people there would say I have a Californian accent but I speak very clearly. My grandmother does the same thing as you i.e. warsher, shaer (for shower), cuaffe pronounced kou-aff-ee (for coffee). She's from Connecticut.

Yeah, I've met some people from Pittsburgh and Chicago, and they said I have a small accent. Neither of them sounded like they had an accent to me, but to them, I sounded like a slightly southern accent.
The northern midwest has kind of the canadian accent a bit, and the New York, Boston, Jersey accens are just horrible to listen to.
Southern accents from the south like Georgia, florida, louisiana, mississipi, and alabama stick out like a sore thumb.
West coast and southwest accents don't really stand out or even exist to me

Slightly but I think it's fading out the longer I'm away from the south. In the south I have the least pronounced southern drawl in the crowd but anywhere else on earth it's noticeable. To be honest I think I sound like a nerdy/hick/hippie with a little Urkle in there too.

Quote:
St. Louis, Missouri is historically one among several (North) Midland cities, but it has developed some unique features of its own distinguishing it from the rest of the Midland.
A historical feature of the St. Louis dialect is the merger of the phonemes /ɔɹ/ (as in for) and /ɑɹ/ (as in far), while leaving distinct /oɹ/ (as in four). This merger is less frequently found in younger speakers, and leads to the stereotypical exaggeration of the St. Louis accent as "Interstate Farty-Far". Some speakers, usually older generations, have /eɪ/ instead of Standard English /ɛ/ before /ʒ/: thus measure is pronounced /ˈmeɪʒ.ɚ/. Wash (as well as Washington) gains a /ɹ/, becoming /wɔɹʃ/ ("warsh"). The diphthong /ɔɪ/ in standard English becomes more like [ɑːɪ]. For example, words such as "oil" and "joint" are commonly pronounced ayul and jynt, particularly among older speakers within the city and immediate suburbs.[citation needed] The phoneme /ð/ is often replaced with /d/, especially among the white working-class urban populace. For instance, Get in that car over there sounds like Get in dat car over dere. This speech characteristic is common in most large, old cities of the East and Midwest, reinforcing St. Louis's cultural evolution alongside other northern industrial urban centers.[citation needed] Some younger speakers have picked up features of the first stages of the Northern Cities shift; this vowel shift causes, among other changes, raising and tensing of the vowel /æ/, so that words like cat /kæt/ to become more like [kɛət]. A corridor of communities between Chicago and St. Louis is the only place that features of the Inland North have penetrated noticeably into the Midland, despite the long boundary the two regions share. However, St. Louis remains a Midland city in other respects. For example on rhymes with dawn rather than don, unlike the North. Indeed, the fact that on rhymes with dawn is more distinctive in St. Louis than in the rest of the Midland, since the cot–caught merger is prevented in St. Louis by the presence of the Northern Cities shift.

about the heaviest damn NJ accent you've ever heard. My parents and friend's parents have even heavier accents all being from NYC. Listening to them talk is hilarious. If a middle american watches something like Seinfeld, you can pick out what words they have heavy accent on (like dark, car, park (basically pronounced dawk, caw, pawk, etc.)), imagine that, but with 8 out of 10 words. Personally I love the NYC/NJ accent - girls with heavy accents = except the Brooklyn accent. that is fucking obnoxious.
seriously, girl sounds like she is trying way too hard and needs to just STFU. If I was in a room with her I'd want to kill myself.

Also i disagree with your statement that girls with accents are hot.
Accents make hot girls hotter, but they make fat ugly girls fatter and uglier
