Electro vs. Techno
    #17125652 - 10/29/12 05:32 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

A rather ambiguous distinction as far as i can tell. My analogy is taht they play electro at clubs and techno at raves.

Does anyone know for sure what the difference is? Post some videos proving your point.

Here is my understanding:

electro:

Techno:

I always just called techno the tree, and electro, trance, psytrance, dubstep, chillstep, house, hardstyle, dirty dutch, and all those other subgenres, are just the branches of the techno tree

I'm always a definition freak. I thought that electro stood for electronic and techno stood for technological. To me,  the definition  would be the same. But I hear your point about the difference in sound. It's all electronic dance music. I think that events where these two simiAr genres would be playing would be billed as an edm music event/festival/etc.

Edit: I agree with hawk.

I think the distinction is pretty clear compared to certain other generas of EDM!
Idk about the club/rave distinction though. I think your right that your more likly to hear that type at that place but many cases break the rule

^This^...

"Techno" is a very broad term...Electro is one of the many genres that fall under it. Though "Techno" itself is also a distinct genre. At least that's the way I look at it.

perhaps not the best examples, but....

Techno....

Electro...

You guys are all VERY wrong.

Electro:

Dada Life - Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Original Mix)

Techno:

UMEK - 100% Sure

Electro has distorted synths and usually a break beat.  Techno has very tight compressed synths, and much more subtle drum patterns and layers.

Electro generally falls under the bigger genre of "big room house", and has big build ups and very distinct "drops" and "breakdowns".  Techno builds up much more slowly, constantly adding layers, and there isn't as much contrast between the "drops" and "breakdowns" - in techno/tech house the drums are constantly driving forward.  IMO it's the best music to dance to.

Here's a killer techno mix to give you an idea:

Manzone & Strong - Alive Till Seven

This is absolutely NOT techno.  Not even close.  This is just general "electronica".

So my room mate calls dubstep techno. What do you think about that?

i'm a bit of a trance head.. okay big trance head! I used to like techno and DJ Contacreast is by far the greatest techno artist i know of and he's only 18. I'm more into the progressive trance and uplifting trance music now a days. So much emotion can be found in a song with no words. that is trance

Didn't you just make this thread because you didn't know the difference between techno and electro, then you posted a D&B mix as techno?  Are you sure you like hardcore techno and not D&B?

recently i have enjoyed Andy moor's album Zero point one. Anything from Above & Beyond's record label Anjunabeats volumes. I love their synths in almost all those songs. Really, really, love their album "Anjunabeats 100"

here's one off another anjunabeats album

builds up to one awesome explosion

I might get crucified here, but classifying music is so weird to me. There's no exact criteria for what one type of music is compared to another. At least with these crazy sub-genre levels.  To me, it's electronic and that's it.  I mean there's nothing wrong with it, we're just trying to better describe one music from another, but that's all it is is a description.

In the end it is what it is regardless of what you call it.

Well that's ridiculous.  If I'm going out to an event I want to know what kind of music is playing.  I don't want to go to something touted as techno event and hear this:

It makes sense to classify music for a variety of reasons, and techno is significantly different from electro.  Separating techno and tech house is difficult, absolutely, but there a large difference between electro/trance/techno/IDM/etc.
