Simple Tyvek Lids * 1
    #17085316 -

I recently receiveed 10 post office tyvek envelopes. Boy their quality has went down hill over the past couple of years. If you compare the new envelopes to the old ones you'll easily spot the difference in quality. Just by looking at the new ones they are obviously VERY inconsistent with thickness and quality. It also appears as though the tyvek is perforated too! I can no longer recommend post office tyvek envelopes. Synthetic filter disks are the way to go unless you have house wrap tyvek or another source for tyvek material that is decent quality.

Drill one 1/4" hole in the dead center of each lid. I use a stencil so I can easily mark dead center. You can use the lid right side up or right side down, doesn't matter. Using the metal lid protects your contam filter when you shake your jars.

Cut tyvek disks the same diameter as the lids. Apply a nice, thick, silicone inoculation point in the dead center of the disks. Leave the silicone to cure overnight before using them on jars or PCing them. Blue (sensor safe) RTV silicone is almost completely odorless (unlike red RTV silicone). RTV silicone comes in tubes with a handy cap and keeps very well for long periods of time with the cap left on.

Secure the ring. Tyvek is waterproof so you do not have to cover the tops of the jars with foil before PCing. You can use foil if you like of course.

These lids provide a very good contam filter, self healing inoculation point and gas exchange. You do not require more holes than what's shown. I've tried using more holes and I saw no benefit. For 3-4 years now I've been inoculating grain jars in the open air without using a GB. I can honestly say that I have never had a grain jar contaminate using these lids. Whenever I have had a contam it could easily be traced back to the inoculant used.

These tyvek disks are used in the same manor as as synthetic filter disks, but with the added benefit of a silicone inoculation point. Simply wipe inoculation points with alcohol, flame sterilize the needle, squirt out a drop to cool the needle and immediately begin inoculating. It's just that simple. No GB, no tape, no polyfill, easily reusable and the lids are washable.

I remove the rings and keep all my rings in a box. I remove the tyvek disks and put them in their own container (tyvek disks are reusable). I wash my lids then keep them in their own container.

Friend I do not think that tyvek is waterproof.  Water resistant?  Yes.  Water proof?  No, but synthetic filter disks are!

In general tyvek is waterproof. Water has a lot of surface tension and does not permeate it unless you build up a column of water (creating pressure) and drive water through it under pressure.

Tyvek is a strong, waterproof cover that serves various purposes

Waterproof, water resistant ... it just works. I haven't used foil over my jars in a looooong time and no problems have occurred. If you've ever used tyvek you'll see that water beads up on it and rolls right off or can be wiped off in an instant.

If I ever do switch to using synthetic filter disks I will still use the same lids and apply a silicone inoculation point due to the benefit each provides.

Whats the point of the Tyvek in this TEK? You are still using the metal lid and there is only one hole so what is the point of having it at all?

Is there only 1 hole covered with RTV or am I missing something? I'm trying to figure out where gas exchange can occur.

The lid protects the tyvek but has a hole allowing you to inoculate through and allows for GE.

Tyvek is the contam filter and the silicone is the self-healing inoculation point.

Works perfectly. Lids can be washed. Tyvek disks can be set aside and reused over & over again.

Yes there is only one 1/4" hole which allows you to inoculate through and also allows for GE. You can use more than one hole. I've tried it and found no benefit or advantage.

Keep in mind that the hole is not sealed air tight. There is a gap between the lid and the tyvek. The silicone inoculation point is on top of the tyvek so there is a lot of tyvek surface are for GE with contam filter.

Indeed.  Do you happen to know the pore size of tyvek?  I imagine it varies as there are a few types of tyvek.

If it works for you it works for you!

I've read that pressure cooking tyvek multiple times could cause the pores to close up, thus inhibiting gas exchange.

Sorry I'm just not getting it.

How can there be any GE if the hole has RTV over it? I thought the point of Tyvek was as a filter over a hole in the lid. There is only one hole and it have RTV over it. Why not just put the RTV over the hole and put a second hole in the lid and use a small piece of Tyvek. This just seems like a waste of Tyvek.

You have to think 3 dimensionally. The lid is not flat. The center of the lid is recessed in comparison to the outer edge. Notice the depression found in most lids.

Most Kerr lids have a depression on the top and the bottom. They are very irregular shaped lids.

I never considered gluing filter material over holes as convenient. Also I don't like washing the filter material itself when washing lids. In this tek allows you to set the filter disk aside and wash the lid separately.

I've been using and reusing the same tyvek disks for 3-4 years and they are still zero contam. The inoc points are still holding up great too.

Synthetic filter disks are on my 'to do list'. Since tyvek works so damn good, seeing how synthetic filter disks are said to be top notch ... I expect them to be well worth every penny. Tyvek has worked perfectly for me over the years I've always had that 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mentality.

You can find RTV silicone at most any auto parts store. I really like the blue stuff because it is damn near odorless unlike the red stuff.
