SGFC Question
    #16898811 - 09/23/12 07:23 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

As I live in a very cold climate and I'm about to put my cakes into a SGFC in a few days, I have to heat my FC. It can get to about 40-45F at night. I have been using a water heater and buckets to keep my jars at ~72F. Since the bucket for my SGFC will be submerged, I cannot drill holes into the bottom of my SGFC; will holes in the sides and lid be adequate for FAE? I hear airflow through the perlite is needed....

Build the thing to as the tek says if you want it to work.  If it gets that cold buy a heater and a humidifier to counter the dry air it will make.  Or better yet grow somewhere that doesnt get so cold like in your house/apartment not outside in the storage closet/shed.

My house is run on gas, we do not live in the city. It is very expensive to have a house to being runnin on gas and electricity for 10 hours a day when your not there.

Was thinking the same thing.  But I assume this grow is hidden someplace in the attic or garage or shed.  *Ponders reason*

If you have to hide a grow, it's normally from parents or others living with you.  You really should not do that as if you get in trouble, being it their residence as well, they will be as equally responsible as you, if not more if it is a parent/guardian.

If that's not the case, you should really look into at the very least a little heater for the grow area.

Normally you would not shut heat off 100% when not home yet keep at 55-60.  Kind of use a lot more gas to re-heat it to livable conditions from that low of temps, then it would to maintain a 55-60 degree temp range.

None the less your home your decision.  Look into one of them little heaters that people use at their office and what have you.

Your fruits will grow either way, but they will stall and take forever.

Look into doing a bulk grow next time.  As bulk substrate does generate it's own heat(Few degree's).

Its a toyo, we keep it at 45 degrees during the day (it can get to -40 where i live). It kicks on if it gets lower than that.

I'm not very good at the Fahrenheit measurement that Americans seem to love, so I was curious what -40f was in c.  Apparently also -40.

Do you live at the North Pole?  Are you Santa?  That's cold.

my understanding of the SGFC is that it functions on natural currents as created by a heat differential within the 'closed' environment.  If the bottom area isn't open, the heat differential might not be great enough to draw in the external area and create currents.

Like others have mentioned, i think you'd do well to re-think trying to submerge the bottom of the SGFC and instead look into a cheap heater and humidifier for the grow room.  A cheap ceramic heater can be had for about 15$ and humidifiers aren't much more expensive.

Jesus christ 45 degrees...it hovers about that temp where I'm at all winter long OUTSIDE.  Santa don't need to trip yo.  The elves....now that's a whole different story.
