Dunking/Cold-shocking Invitro
    #1657376 - 06/23/03 11:45 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all,

Quick question. Is it possible to dunk a cake in it's original jar before removing it? Like to take a colonized half pint, add water until the jar was full, toss in the fridge, and tip the glass to drain excess water when removed?

I'm planning on growing invitro and thought that this might accellerate the process and reduce chances of contams.. and yes I know the fridge is a dirty place but there's always the chance when handling the cakes too much.

I guess the real question is, since I've never handled a colonized cake before, will it absorb enough water or will the jar hold enough water, or will I absolutely have to remove the cake and place it in a larger container or bag?

Thanks in advance.. BTW, anyone actually tried this?

you can pour distilled water into the jar and watch as the water level around the cake will rise and the cake will eventually float.  Dunk it for 24 hours and then fruit-- I have never done this invitro just for cakes and casings---  I assume if you dump the excess water out it could work--

A friend tried this yesterday, but the jars wouldn't accept much water, so at birthing time he knocked'em up with a couple cc's of sterile water. If he had it to do over again, he'd put them in bigger jars.

My faery godmother just did this last night- unfortunately the timing was off and it was only a 9-10 hour dunk/cold shock.  But she still has high hopes

Dunk the cakes in the jars. People are saying that it?s more work. Taking out the top verm layer and putting water in is not more work. Why have the cakes banging against each other in some pitcher, bag or whatever. Put them in the fridge and give them a cold shock for 12 hours. I say 12 cause that is whats popular here. Myself I?ve never done under 24.
When they are done pour out the water and turn the jar upside down in the chamber and you hands have never touched the cake. That?s just my 2 cents.

Good Luck. My friend has a couple of jars that are almost fully colonized. I think I will tell him to try this.
