possible contam on cakes

OK - my friend had 4 cakes ready to be dunked. On one of the cakes he discovered obvious cobweb so it got pitched. He carefully checked the other cakes and they seemed fine so he dunked them. He got his casing ready today crumbled 2 of the cakes and when he pulled the 3rd out of the water half of it was slimy and grey. Obviously, this cake got pitched too.
Problem is they were all dunked in the same container :frown:

. He went ahead and made a small casing with what was left but doesnt have much hope that it will make it.
Anyone know what the contam could be? He's guessing cobweb that got oversaturated, but this is the first he's seen it right out of the jar. Usually it happens to cakes in the fruiting chamber.

Only time could tell. Since they were all dunked in the same container it's very probable you could have some problems.
If it was indeed cobweb, then i would try the casing with the good cakes anyway, and tossing the whole stuff at first contam sighting.
It's your call.

My friends casing did indeed develop cobweb. He misted it with a 50:50 peroxide solution 3 days ago (very heavily on the bad spots). Added a little salt to the bad spots also for good measure. It hasnt come back so far and the myc is looking very healthy. It was placed in its own growing chamber today. He'll let me know in the next week or 2 if there are any pins.

Salt and cobweb seem to be a good "combo". Glad to see it's going good.
