wow,
1. instead of higher/lower, substitute broad/narrow. As for the laughable "And one isn?t necessarily ?better? than the other" bit.... right, so it's better to stay focuses on uncreative work? no.

Quote:

"power-tripping ?spiritual? guru-hustler trying to sell potential followers on a particular state of consciousness because he could use it to control them, fuck them, or appropriate their funds and possessions while they were obsessively busying themselves with trying to reach said ?higher? state."

this guy obviously has some kind of axe to grind. I don't think that people like ken kesey and john lennon where trying to... well, they where fucking people, but that's cause they lived in a kick ass party. this guy seem like the square type, quite frankly. Not smart square - he just levels sophmoric jibes against "most trippers" as evidence of his stupid 'myth' debunkers.

2. people who have never tripped before NEED SITTERS.

3. bad trips = hard trips.

4.psychedelics lead to something, but this guy sure doesn't know what. whose to say it isn't enlightenment? who is he to say people who are enlightened after taking drugs "would have been like that anyway"? what a load of shit.

Have you ever READ an issue of Trip Magazine?

Didja happen to read my story about the squirrel I found (as a "yoot")?

He forgot Myth #5: The Aztecs used mushrooms in religious rituals.

We all know it wasn't religous or shamanic, don't we? That was just an excuse to party and watch cool CEVs and listen to rock & roll.

Rhizoid

In scrutinizing the ongoing debates about psychedelic drugs and "greater" realization, I've noticed one thing.  Those of us who speak against the concept of awakening through drugs seem very set against it, and this is probably precisely the reason why no personal experiences have arisen to their contrary.  Just as someone who accepts without question the idea of "enlightenment on a tab" will likely create the experience for himself, so will someone whose mind is shut against it make no such observations.

As for the TripZine article, it's author reminds me of an elephant on a half-sedated rampage through city streets.

Quote:

Objectively speaking, of course, there isn?t any such thing as ?higher? (or, for that matter, ?lower?) consciousness.

Who is this person to make such an assertion?

Quote:

Who first insisted that consciousness is somehow inherently vertical?like some kind of ladder with higher and lower rungs?anyway?

I think it was the Chinese who stumbled across this understanding some 6000 years ago.  It was an idea that fostered hundreds of different philosophies and religions that spread around the globe and shaped our environment today.  The notion has permeated science, medicine, psychology and psychiatry, and sits at the ideological root of the worlds most widely known philosophers and theologians, regardless of their stance toward the world.

Pardon me if that came across a little cacophonic.

ped- man, that was right on. It's strange that there is a reactionary movement against profundity in tripping... so much so that people are prompted to make egregious and highly defensive logical fallacies. what about huxley and burroughs and kesey, those early explorers who communicated profound understandings? is it reasonable to dismiss these sorts of examples? My experiences certainly don't lead me to. different people have different experiences, but it's sad if, because of a fearful hostility towards letting go, the experience isn't meaningful. you do get what you put in, and if you don't trip without leaving your baggage at the door, you don't really get in.

Kesey would have agreed with the author (at least, from what I've gathered from his writings and interviews).

Are you not familiar with the Kesey vs. Owsley argument?
Kesey insisted that it wasn't the drug that "did it".
Owsley, the chemist, insisted it was.

it was hardly as clear cut as that. Regardless of the finer points of kesey's outlook, he always maintained that there was a profound experience to be had on LSD which raised your awareness-- later he concluded (cop trouble?) that LSD was making one aware of an independent phenomenon-- either way, this is hardly agreement with this reactionary nazi. Furthermore, Kesey always said that this experience could be the most piss in your pants scary thing you could imagine, i.e. the bad trip is the strong trip, the 'real' trip.

I never had a guide or a sitter. But then again I didn't do 3 hits my first time.

I like the idea of a broad or narrow conscience. Just because the Chines decided it was that was does not make it correct. It is a theory.

And I agree completely with the bad trip section. I often find them to be more productive in the end even if they are not as fun. But I think my attitude towards "bad" trips has made it so that I don't experience them as intensely. It becomes nothing more that a tuff spot to work through and once past it the beauty of the remaining trip is all the more profound.

My one bad trip was due to a bad setting---> a bunch of (now ex-) friends (old school ravers) telling me it was okay that another friend of mine was in the other room huffing butane out of a balloon. The situation became much worse when some dude was shoving codeine in my face to calm me down because I wouldn't shut up about how fucked up it was that they thought it was "cool, man".

None of those people ever made it out of that scene in good shape.

Those situations are tough. I would have had to change my setting. Bad trips induced or propagated by other people are really tough but are easy to fix by getting out of that setting. I was primarily referring to introspective trips that get serious.

Funny you should make a post regarding an article from that magazine... I just found out about it last night and ordered a 4 issue subscription.

Then I click on your post and read this. Must be coincidence.  :stoned:
