HEY Everyone. I was recently hunting and found a lot of mushrooms growing on a decomposing pile of horse maunre and hay. There a lot of different speceis but I reckognized some that looked like Pann. Subbs. and thought i should ask you guys. The spore print is black but the stem is a brownish tan color and doesnt blue. It rained the night before so they may look a little darker. The stems were somewaht thick yet hollow and there was a white ring around the gills. I am not sure if they are active or not and thats why I need your help. Any hunters please reply with and ID for these mushrooms. Thanks.

Hey. Thanks for th replies. How do u know its panelous Spicnhtrus. They looks quite similiar to Subbs. I am located in New Jersey to to let ya know. There are many other shrooms that look like subbs but are different from the ones in the pic. Could Subbs be located around these Spichtrus's too?

The fringed teetn on the outer edges opf the caps are the primary reason is it P. sphinctrinus, the thin stalks are another although I cannot seen them here but I know this mushroom.
mj
And besides, Pubbs in manure is rare and never that many shrooms in a single cow pie.

There were other shrooms around the patch of these that looked similiar but more tannish brown. Do you thinnk Subbalteus could be in the same area as Spinchtrus? Please reply.

YES, if it horse manure they can definately be found in the same area. i have found them and/or P. campanulatus/papilionaceus.
and when we are talking about P. sphinctrinus/campanulatus/papilionaceus we are basically talking about the same species. there are minute difference that may or may not distinguish these species from each other. perhaps these differences will be resolved in the next few years.
thinking of P. sphinctrinus i often think of smaller cap size and a cap that old-age Pan luster. also the fragments at the pileus margin are often more outcurved and less tooth-like.
as for P. papilionaceus, i think of a more brittle and stiffer stem that is often dark reddish brown, a kind of shiny cap and little or no veil remanents on the cap margin.
and P. campanulatus in my mind, has more pronounced tooth-like veil remanents and slight yellowish colors in the middle of the cap. overall lighter in color.
P. retirugis often has a netted cap, but overall in appearance it is very similar to P. campanulatus in my mind.
if anyone knows the exact macroscopic difference in these species then please post them, although there really arent any 'exact' differences because mycologists have not really agreed on them.
