Do we shake grain to grain jars?
    #16298560 - 05/28/12 11:16 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I did some grain to grain transfers 2 days ago, and the mycelium is taking off.

Is it ok to give them a shake at around 30% colonization?

I only ask since some of the jars look like the colonized grains were not evenly spread through the jars.

Any input is appreciated.

I do.

Think of it this way. When you shake, its the equivilent of a g2g transfer. But now instead of using a tenth of a jar, you're using a third of a jar. High spawn ratios result in faster colonization speeds. My experience is that if you shake at thirty percent, you can expect full Colonization in five to seven days. Sometimes faster.

So do you shake em right when you transfer? Or do you wait til they start working their magic and then shake?

I shake them in after the transfer. If they are dispersed throughout the jar I just let it go. If they clumped in one area then I will shake again at 30%

I transfer, and then give it a good shake to distribute the grains. This distributes the inoculation points. Then I shake again at %30.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I was a bit concerned that shaking twice would over-stress the mycelium, but I am happy to know that is not the case.

You're only really shaking once though.

When you do your grain transfer, the master jar has already been shaken and broken up. All the damage that's going to occur has already happened. When you add grain to the recipient jar, you shake it to distribute the inoculation points. Its not hurting the mycelium any further.

This was super useful. Just shook my first ever G > G jars at about 30% without really thinking about it. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.
