Cold Death to Mycelium
    #1629543 - 06/12/03 05:58 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Quick Questions:

How long does it take for Mycelium to die at 20 degrees F?

What is the lowest temperature Mycelium can survive (even if not growing)?

Thank you in advance!

20 F will do a lot of damage, but no clue as to how long to how much. Cold isn't the problem; the crystalline structure of frozen water has some very sharp edges and will lyse (cut) the cells.

Mycelium can survive sub zero temps if frozen properly so the water crystals do not rupture the cell walls. This is done with a cryoprotectant such as glycerin.

20 F is ok but the freezing water will rupture the cell walls.

Dimethyl sulfoxide works better.

Where do you get that?

I can get glycerin at Wal-Mart.

I think they sell it or used to sell it at health food stores as a remedy for muscle cramps, but I work in a lab, so we have a ton of it handy.

You want to know the concentration, though, so you can make up a solution.
