Hi,
I'm in town and cannot find any BRF or Rye Flour.
Will whole wheat flour work ok?
Many thanks for your help.

Did a quick search and the first one I read said your fruits may not be as potent. Type Whole Wheat Flour in search and make a decision from there. You could always buy some brown rice. And then get a mortar and pestle or a cheap coffee grinder and go that route too.

Why not just order BRF online?

I would just keep looking until you find it. Look in the bulk foods section of grocery stores and if you can't find it there keep looking and if you can't find it then just make your own brown rice flour by grinding up long grain brown rice.
I've also heard of success with using 12 grain flour.

I'm always a fan of sticking to the plan. If finding BRF is a hassle, you could try two options, ordering online or switching to bird seed. I think a mix is fine, but I would stick to straight millet. There are numerous articles on here about how to work with WBS, I'm sure, but basically you soak the seeds, discard the ones that float the next day, pressure cook as usual. You will get people on both sides of the fence about it, I don't think it matters, but I'm a BRF man myself.
BTW, has anyone ever tried to order BRF online? Get down to the section where it describes what other people bought along with it. 8 oz glass jars and vermiculite every time. Made me laugh the first time I saw it.

That's the best way to succeed in this hobby.

I've never discarded a single floater and have had complete success with my grows. However I would recommend avoiding WBS that has cracked corn or black oil sunflower seeds in it.

In the end I decided patience is probably the best idea
Ill order online and wait one week, not going to make any difference really.
Thanks for the replies, hopefully I'll get a good first run in this new hobby
Cheers

You don't need to order brown rice flour. Simply buy a bag of brown rice and grind it in a coffee grinder. An alternative is rice bran or wheat bran. Most whole wheat flour is only partially whole wheat, and is mixed with bleached white flour. RR

Is there any substantial difference between brown rice and long grain brown rice aside from it maybe being a little easier to grind up?
VV
i think i just used to go to the albertsons down the street and buy some brown rice. i would throw it in a blender.
i mean, don't use the family blender, go to goodwill or whatever. i think between the blender and the pressure cooker always goin, and the germ paranoia...it all led to the divorce j/k

I used our blender for mine, it worked surprisingly well. Once I saw my mom had a coffee grinder though I went over to her house and made about $20 worth of BRF in such a short amount of time.

OP, what I did was get some brown rice at Wally world, and walked over to the coffee aisle and opened the bag and put it in the grinder and then I re-ground it once more. Don't worry if you get a little bit of coffee in with it, it is also good for your mushrooms. Makes your cakes smell good too
I've actually read somewhere on here that if you grind it yourself its much more nutritious!
