Excess water in popcorn?
    #1618100 - 06/08/03 10:33 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I recently followed the procedure for the popcorn tek. I just sterilized it in the microwave for 10 minutes, having the waterline about a 1/8 of an inch above the popcorn. Well, after 10 minutes of microwaving, theres still some water in there. Its about half as much or a little less, but ... is this normal? Should there be some free water?

And if not, what is a safe way to remove the excess?

Yea, well some guy was talking about having that level water for grains when you nuke it, so I tried it. Its definately way too much water, I'll nuke it for like 7 or 8 minutes a little later to get some more water out. I did soak for 24 hours and then simmer for an hour prior to nuking it.

I hope this works.

microwaving is just about the worst way there is to prep grain, you'll do much better using fractional sterilization in a regular pot with a tight lid.
and excess water is a real killer, esp. with popcorn so make sure there isn't any.

Yea, I know microwaving isnt the best method, but its the only option I got right now. But I've heard from various sources that it does work, so ... I'm gonna give it a shot.

Sorry to hear you dont have a pot/PC. I am constantly faced with the same problem myself...You could fractionally sterilize it in the microwave, just use a thick ass plastic pot instead of metal and use tyvek/rubberbands to cover your jars!

I know you'll flame me for this ... but ... I'm 16. I can't hide a PC. And no, I'm not growing in my parents house. I'm just inoculating, incubating and using the spawn to inoculate an outdoor patch. So, I gotta do this with what we have, and with little time...

When I'm on my own, or in a month when I get my car, I'll buy one, I can just keep the PC in my car. Hell, I can keep everything in my car once I get one!

Fractional sterilization doesn't use a pressure cooker -- just a pot of boiling water. You boil the stuff for a while one day, let it sit, boil it again the next day, let it sit, and then do it a third time on the third day. Then you're ready to go. Do a search on the site for it and you'll find more info.

Yea, I considered fractional. The only problem is time. I gotta do everything while my parents are out. And thats a rare occasion.
