The Trillion Dollar Industry
    #16134112 - 04/24/12 04:33 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Has anyone heard about that new company Planetary Resources? Apparently they have an ambitious scheme to mine the asteroids for valuable minerals and water. They also appear to have some serious funding from several notable tech billionaires. Honestly I think this is one of the greatest things that could have happened. I am glad some people have realized that taking mining off world will reduce pollution and save the earth environment.

Read something on them the other day. It was also in the article that it took 6 billion dollars to bring back 60 grams of space rock.

Edit: but the real money maker they have is that their idea of making an gas station in outer space.

Yea if we could manufacture fuel in space the cost of space travel would plummet. The only thing I am afraid of is short sighted fools trying to put a stop to space travel. Its like alot of people don't realize the vast economic benefits that would occur if it was take seriously and succeeded.

maybe if every nation in the world took their military budgets and put that money towards new energy technologies and space exploration we could see some crazy advances in technology.

I agree although in my personal opinion governments will not be the ones exploring space, private companies will. This is due to the fact that a private company could just focus on space exploration were as a government has many other responsibilities. A corporation would also be more efficient and costs associated with space travel would come down.

They said crossing the atlantic was impossible, the vikings disproved that theory. They said heavier than air flight was impossible it happened anyway. Nothing will ever be accomplished without risk and dreaming big.

It has nothing to do with it being impossible.

How long do you think it will take before they've got "the big haul" and are returning to Earth? Probably at the very very least, a decade, and that's on the short end of the spectrum, wouldn't you say?

How much money do you think they have, compared to how much money they need before this is accomplished?

Then, once they have the materials, after all the training of personnel and testing and development of the tools they need, as soon as it reaches Earth, guess what? The prices on those materials will drop -- drastically.

But I can pretty much guarantee even if they do start development, etc, they will close shop before they are able to bring anything to Earth, and all those who funded the project will be left holding the bag.

Go ahead though. It's not my money to piss away.

Honestly its a long term investment they even acknowledge that on there homepage. Also the people investing in this are serious billionaires and I am not worried about this company running out of money any time soon.

So what?  Just because something was said to be impossible but wasn't, doesn't mean that any other particular thing that someone says is impossible is possible.  There is absolutely no connection.

There is also a vast galaxy between "possible" and "is even remotely likely to be profitable".
