Q's on birthing and casing
    #1610882 - 06/05/03 09:00 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

My friend is in the middle of two projects right now, both of which have grow logs here in the shroomery. This is his first time and now he's run into a delimma.

His first project are about ready to birth. He will be out of town until Sunday and unable to take care of them. Can he take them out of the incubator and wait until Monday to dunk and place them in the birthing chamber? I've read that making them cooler will preserve them longer. The last thing he wants is to have them go bad in the jars while he's away.

His second project has 6, almost full quart jars that are ready to case. He made a bunch just in case contams set in during colonization, but so far no signs so he has a LOT of substrate! This is going to be an indoor tek. Does anyone know of some good containers, such as foil baking pans or something, that can hold nearly a quart of substrate plus casing material? Suggestions to how he should proceed are very welcome!

Also, his 'test' birthing chamber uses perlite in a rubbermaid, but humidity has been very low in the past few days. There's about 1.5-2 inches of perlite with .5 inch water. There are NO water droplets on the sides and it doesn't seem very humid (both wally world and petco were out of hygrometers). Would getting a bubbler help? Maybe he should splurge on a cool mist....

Sorry about the long post but he needs advice from good shroomers! Thanks

fully colonized jars can be kept for a long time ie: a few months if need be.. keep them in the dark, and out of the incubator.. room temp or cooler.. they will be fine until you get back.

the quarts... you can find foil pans of all sizes.. get 2 of them and double them up.. stronger and they won't wear thru.. mycelium eats alum for some reason..

i'm serious... the casing will eat thru the pan by the 2nd flush.. line it with foil or double them up!

no wonder why you trip when you eat them.

he's got some bread pans now that fit 6 snug into one of his rubbermaids, but i have a feeling each quart will make more than one bread pan. he should then probably get another rubbermaid and some more pans, or possibly larger pans to case the entire jar.

rubbermaid lids *( roughnecks ) don't seal very good...

just the perlite should do the trick!!

take the perlite out.. soak it. rinse it. and put it back with 1/2 the amount of water...

so if they don't seal very well, then cutting a small hole in the lid for a 55mm computer fan wouldn't be a good idea? there space between the fan blades that would probably let in/out more air than the seals

you want to build up moisture.. if you have open holes the moisture will escape and you will never have droplets forming on the walls of your bin!! common sense!!

what type of rubbermaid is it? the clear type? or the opaque type with a homemade window on it????

mist the walls with a spray bottle when ever you open the lid to air it out!!

if your cakes get a bit of water on them it's no big deal... but keep that humidity high!

They're not cut yet but one might be used in an automated setup. The test setup just has a brand new rubbermaid with perlite and a plastic mesh for the bottom (like those used for over head lighting). If his dog didn't eat up his USB cord there would be pictures....
