!!! Extra Special Thanks to Shamus Richmond III for this invaluable information !!!!!
Suspected Ps. Caerulipes found in West Virginia (as specific as it gets). May 1, 2003. These mushrooms are well known to local young adults. They are found in deciduous forests near river valleys. This bit of information is important. These grow most prolifically in disturbed soils (i.e. flood plains, overflow areas). Found growing directly on decayed wood debris (most commonly on Maple and Birch species) covered by 1/4 inch of humus/soil/debris very near grasses (as you can see in the pics). Also sometimes found growing through moss on the forest floor.
According to my Audubon Identification guide the following pararmeters for Caerulipes match with these specimens: Size: (small) Spore Color: Black/Purple Habitat: Near rivers in deciduous forest Range: West Virginia, USA
But the season pararmeter does not. Audubon says August - October, yet these specimens were found May 1. MJShroomer has said that June is the season for Caerulipes, so there seems to be some debate about Season.
A great photo of habitat.
Spores have been collected and are awaiting further analysis. I do not currently have any extra spore samples to give away, so please dont ask. As far as cultivation teks, my intuition tells me that a Ps. Azurescens tek would be quite successful for this species as well.
As far as psychoactivity is concerned:
These are about the same potency as Ps. Cubensis by dried weight. When eaten fresh, these mushrooms are allegedly considerably more potent. The experience is high quality, shamanic, most closely relating to the Pan Cyan or Liberty Cap Experience.
Anymore questions, please ask!
Lets all thank Shamus Richmond III for these wonderful pictures and information!!! He and I hope that it will help hunters/culitvators in the future!

Yes those are definately Psilocybe caerulipes. Congradulations, two collections in five years posted here at the shroomery. mj As for season, May through August wouyd be about right. They are a summer mushroom along the east coast. Other refeerences ay they are as far south as Florida, but still are extremely rare. THis is becasue they are a wild shroom, buit have been collected in Ohio and Michigan in many publis areas such as parks and well mulched garden bed-boxes. However I believe they do not occur during the extreme hot months. By the way, Gary Lincoff is a friend of mine and he did tell me years ago when he did the Audubon field guide that he has bnever seen a P. caerulipes. The picture in his book was from the New york Botanical Gardens collection of Photographs. Gary also edited the Simon and Schulster Mushroom Field Guide but the Publishers at Simon and Shulster would not let Gary put any PSilocybe mushroom sections or photos int hat guide. They are an anti-drug pubishing firma nd thought that putting that informationin their field guide would lead to illicit drug use and traficking. mj

Wow. That is truely amazing.
Wasn't Mr_Mushrooms actually saying how he would PAY $100 for a print, to the first person who found this mushroom.
Thats funny that there has been much talk about this mushroom, if it even existed, or if anyone could find it...
That is great man, thankyou so much for the pictures and beautiful discription.

Wish I could spare some money but I would love to fly there and take some good digital photos of hte species. mj
Next batch, bring them home and put them on your scanner and scan some images. I do with blue ringers every now and then and even with cubes. The scanner is a good camera fro when yo do not have one.
I have even gone to kinkos copy shop and laid shrooms ontheir scanner. no problem.

great man, i was hoping to beat anyone to finding one but looks like that 100$ did it for you. i am proud of you nevertheless i have a florida spot with decidious forest and a stream about 5 minutes from my house, and it rained last night considerably. still not the rain we need but not bad. and then there is a park next to Brooker Creek. perhaps.... also , in stamet's book, the description calls the mushroom brown and fading to ochreanous light brown. why is this and does P. careulipes exhibit this variation in color normally or is it just because it is hydrophanous?

I think his color is off becasue of the quality of the photograph.
The bluing images look more like the photos I have in my library.
mjshroomer
The caps also can dry toi a straw-yellow color like cubeis and P. cyanescens.
as seen in this photo of P. caerulipes
If you notice soem of the caps also have the egg eye look in their center.

thank you, but i was actually reading his description of the cap color. although the first brown-capped picture looks of pretty good quality. those pictures you have given would resemble Ps. Careulipes much more than the white ones found now.

Nice work, better pics would be wondeful, but these are better than nothing!!!
I know that most psilocybes share similar characteristics and can appear very similar, but man do some of those look exactly like Ps. weilii! Which would still be an exciting find that far north.
Likely they are not weilii though, and they are the real deal caerulipes, which brings up another thing. I think, I am almost positive, I found caerulipes last year. I have found 1 patch of mushrooms I thought were weilii but were kinda different and had a different smell about them, yet similar too. The thing that suprised me was my location. I was out in the country about 2hrs outside ATL riding my 4 wheeler on public WMA land where I sometimes deer hunt. I spotted a cluster of 6 mushrooms on the bank of a small creek in the middle of the woods, no disturbed land for 50 miles or more, it was deep country. This was a completely natural setting. I either found wild weilii in their natural habitat, or they were caerulipes.
If the books are right, this species is rare but once found a patch is known to fruit for a long time, they should be back again this year and if so I will get pics and send them to someone to put under a microscope and compare to weilii to see if they are the same species or not.
This post and those pics defintiely got me thinking, I really need to make sure every weilii I find is indeed weilii, cause those caerulipes could pass as a weilii in my book.

WOW. Thanks for sharing. Sure wish the quality of the photos was better, as it sure is hard to get a feel for the mushroom. any ideas about environmental conditions that may have promoted pinning...ie. temps night/day for previous two weeks, amount of rainfall, amount of canopy? is it windy?
just kidding, sort of. WORD. and, as a final quip, i reckon i'll have to invest some time looking for this mushroom if the prints are worth a hundred bucks i MUST get some to fruit...then i can just live off the prints for a while..... hehe

Sorry to nag you, but can you specify a little more on habitat. Were the pics above on a flood plain that is disturbed becasue it is cut back by the city every other year or so(this is typically the case, laws say a flood plain must be kept clear and open) Or is it a natural flood plain, like just a low area along a river that frequently floods and is diturbed by the flooding waters? What other kind of disturbed habitats have they been found in? We are talking about man made disturbence(sp?) correct, or are we talking about landslides, floods etc...? And how frequently are they found and in what numbers. Do they seem to be widespread across WV or are they kinda local to an area? I'm not asking you to get specific(please don't) just trying to get a good idea of just how uncommon these mushrooms are.
And would you ever consider taking an out of stater on a picking expedition I'm in GA, so its not like I could rip off your patch, but I'd love to get some better pics, spore prints, and specimens if possible. I have family in WV and would love to come see these things in person this summer, if for anything just to get an ass loads of pics for the library. Hell, I'd pay to see these in person!

WEll someone saying they would pay a hundred and actualy paying it is another thing. http://www.petfungus offers phony sporeprints of P. samuiensis which he claimed came form eastern oregon. HE wants 160.00 a print for those. Trouble is is that they are not P. samuinesis and hsi story is shit.
He says a thai farmer brought his horses to america and that is where the shrooms came from. They grow in manured soil of water buffalo on Koh samui island inthe gulf of Thailand. Ther area no horses ont he island.
And besides it would be cheaper to buy a horse in ORegon or Washingotn than to bring it to America on a ship.
When I was first made aware of the sight he was offering the prints for $60.00. A fter i told him I was selling the first 25 for $5.00 and then ten for each one after that, he raised the price to 160.00.
His photograph posted at his sight of the samuineis looks like a liberty cap and is taller thant he three inch height of samuinsis.
I doubt if anyone would pay that much for a print.
mj
However, I know if I lived ont he east ocoast between Michigan and Florida I would have found that mushroom by7 now.
It is there.

Most likely Lizard King, those are the very mushrooms involved in this case from West Virginia. I have been in constant contact with the reporter of this articl and he is keeping me informed of the status of the case. They have analysed the shrooms each individual had in their possession since the bust and they were all found to contain Psilocine/psilocybin and they are going ahead to prsecute the people involved. Below is the article. mj XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ILLEGAL MUSHROOM PICKING LEADS TO ARRESTS Approximately 50 people have been arrested in connection with picking of psilocybin mushrooms near Castleman's Run Road in Brooke County near Bethany. Brooke County Sheriff Bernie Kazienko confirmed Tuesday the arrests have been made since May 1, and 30 more people face charges of picking the psilocybin mushroom. Kazienko explained that the psilocybin mushroom, when ingested, produces a mild hallucinogenic effect or "buzz." Psilocybin mushrooms are classified as a controlled substance under the West Virginia Controlled Substance Act. "This is an annual event during the mushroom season, which is May through September," Kazienko explained. "The last couple of years, we've been watching the area, and watching which mushrooms have been picked." He said that while the arrests have been made during the initial investigation, many suspects also were charged with possession of marijuana either on their person or in vehicles. Some individuals attempted to escape the area and were charged with fleeing from police. "We've actually come in contact with approximately 100 people, and other charges are pending on close to a total of 80 individuals," Kazienko said. "There are also juveniles involved." He said the property is owned by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. and that the steel company has been cooperative. He also said he met with an environmentalist and an attorney from Wheeling-Pitt, which owns 160 acres in the area. "We took them to the scene," Kazienko said, adding that since the meeting, Wheeling-Pitt has contacted the West Virginia University Extension Office and the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. "They wanted to see what they could do to eradicate the mushrooms," Kazienko said. He said there are other options, such as using a bulldozer to clear the area. "There will be costs for Wheeling-Pitt associated with that," Kazienko said. Wheeling-Pitt has since hired security personnel to patrol the area. Bethany College security also is involved in the patrolling. "We're going to have people indicted by the grand jury on June 3 in connection with the mushroom incidents," Kazienko said. "Some have been arrested for possession with intent to deliver the mushrooms and others for possession with intent to deliver marijuana." Brooke County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Seminsky also has been working on the investigation and confirmed more warrants will be issued. He said some plain clothes officers also have been on patrol. "We're learning this has been going on for several years," Seminsky said. "We've found people out there from the break of day to late evenings, just after dark." Seminsky said, explaining that none of those arrested had to be transported to the Brooke County Jail in Wellsburg, but were processed at the scene. "Our biggest concern is the safety of the individuals," Seminsky added. "We don't want them ODing on the mushroom or taking the wrong mushroom and dying." Charges were were logged against people from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. A person arrested for simple possession faces a misdemeanor charge and the penalties can include 90 days to six months in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Persons also may be placed on probation for six months. Persons found in possession of the mushrooms with intent to deliver or sell face a felony charge and that carries a prison term of one to five years, a fine of up to $15,000, or both. In addition, any property connected to the incident may be seized, pending forfeiture through the court system. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS At my sugggestion, the reported went to the location but by then there were no mushrooms he coould take photographs of. He was also told to leave the property or they would call the Sheriff on him. mj
