Spingtime Amanitas (Amanita velosa)
    #16094700 - 04/15/12 07:17 PM (12 years, 3 days ago)

Hi everybody, I've been out of town for a bit, and I was out of upload space as well, so I haven't posted for a bit.

But I'm back and now a donating member of The Shroomery.

Been finding TONS of stuff - this has been a great spring.

I'm gonna start off my uploads with the incredibly delicious Amanita velosa (Spingtime Amanita) since Alan just posted a great thread of his finds. GREAT find Alan

Distinguishing factors for me of this mushroom are:

1. Obvious volva
2. Striated stipe where it meets the cap
3. Striated cap margins
4. tellow/tan caps with patch of volva
5. hollow stem filled with cottony pith
6. smell pleasant (or in Alans case and many others fishy)

This is my favorite EDIBLE mushroom. The only way to describe it is super savory. I don't get a shellfish or fishy taste off of them, more of a fleshy meatiness that is very satisfying. However, do not try to eat this mushroom unless you are 100% sure.

Stipe striations:

Stem filled with a pith:

Cook these up with butter, salt, splash of organic Tamari, sweet basil and cover until mushrooms are browned, stir often. Once they are brown add a splash of organic half and half, reduce heat and cook until most the half and half has become a slight gravy. YUM :crazy2:

One of those mushrooms I am gonna have to hit the west coast to find at some point. Sounds delicious!

The bulb is the bulb.

The volva is the volva.

They have a very long term realtionship, but they’re “just friends.”

Nice. I expected to get some springtime Amanita action now that I've moved over to the PNW but haven't seen any yet. Perhaps it's a bit cold where I am. Thanks for the great recipe, will jot that down for later.

Look in your coastal regions by Oak trees, around the area directly located under the outer circumference of the tree branches... sometimes just a bit more out in the field but still close enough to be associated with the trees in the area. It's the time of year for sure though.

Does this only grow in the US? I don't see it in any of my UK books :frown:

Nice finds Dub - it has been a good year for velosa with these late rains.
