Night vision (infrared) spotlight for camcorder
    #15973104 - 03/20/12 06:43 PM (12 years, 1 day ago)

I have a sony handycam. I am posting here, as I got banned for trolling candlepowerforums, lol. I would like to get a infrared spotlight that is good to 100+ yards. What is the best way to do this without spending a lot of money? Any idea how the range of a regular flashlight with infrared filter would measure up to it's range without the filter... I'm trying to decide if I should just buy a powerful flashlight and put a filter on it or buy a dedicated IR light.

I also have a few indecent D cell maglites if there's a way to convert them.

you'd need a huge LED array for 100yds, I dont know of anything currently in
production that gets more than 75', it's like 80 IR LEDs

Correct me if i'm wrong but i think you only need a huge number of led's when lighting up the entire terain (like for security cameras). I just want a focused spotlight. I'd really like to mod the mag lite but I have no idea what to do.

you'll waste more in engineering something to focus a dozen or so
LEDs into a small area than you would on a large LED array, cheaper
to buy somethins already purpose built

I was thinking more along the lines of converting the maglite to LED and using ifrared led's instead of full spectrum's. Focusing wouldn't be a problem, I just know nothing about flashlights. Plus I don't know what type of range I would get with the maglite.

the single LED for the maglight is designed for the purpose, the multi LED
arrays come in a couple of flavors, either focused LEDs or with a parabola
that's still requiring a specialized resin casting on the LED and noe are
purpose built for any range. I have one and with the standard 3w LED it;s
about 40 feet effectively, with a 6 LED parabolic, it was around 70', the
people I've spoken too with the 30 LED conversions were no happier

$20 for the 32 bulb UV conversion, you may be able to find an IR conversion

Well now i'm obsessively reading about night vision. A gen 1 scope would be DANK. How do you think the top 300-400 dollar gen 1 scopes )without an external illuminator) would compare to the sony nightshot with one of these, or something similiar. It will be used for spotting people hiding in the edges of fields and into the treeline. I like the camcorder because of the zoom... what do you think would be better for identifying people in the woods?
