all american pc help
    #1595896 - 05/31/03 09:31 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Ok -I bought a all american pressure cooker off ebay, its a 15 1/2 quart model

I'm used to my small 5 quart PC, which has the lil pipe sticking out with the weight that rocks when its at the proper pressure

so looking at these pics, what the hell is this? how does it work? - should I ditch them and replace with the new items off one of the websites that offer replacement parts...

any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated!!! :-)

RTFM -- doesn't it come with one?

Just put the weight on, tighten and use

That is a pressure relief valve.

If in working order (?)........it will release pressure at around 22 pounds. You also can trip it, to release pressure as you wish - manualy.

Put it back on the lid. Add 3/4 inch of water to the bottom of the AA, seal & fire the puppy up under low heat & see if it holds pressure to 5..............then 10.............then 15 pounds.

Then raise the heat & see if it releases steam around 22 pounds (by itself - without being tripped - manualy). Do not go over 25 pounds. If it does not -- replace it.

If it does........ you are good to go.

6T

Clean that puppy up and do what the previous poster said. Be sure to put some vasoline areound the lip of the lid, the AA has a metal to metal seal, and that little trick makes it seat alot better!

gasket PC's have the 15 lbs. weight which will regulate the pressure at 15 pouns even if you turned the burners on high and forgot about it.

All American's have what is called a Control Valve (what you got there) The little arm lever on top is called a petcock.  When the petcock is vertical the control valve is open (letting out pressure) when the petcock is horizontal the system in closed.  With all american's you have to watch them carefully as they will go past 15 pounds if you leave the heat up. The manual says it will open at 20 pounds automatically but I don't trust that  not in my kitchen.

Also All American's pressurize almost 2 times as fast as Presto's..  Keep an eye on them for the first few uses to get you out of the old Gasket PC habits.

You'll love All American Pressure Cookers (as long as you didn't get an abused one.)

petcock is actualy a screw type valve as is fount on most radiators, thats an overpressure valve, it's spring loaded, more like what you find on a water heater

it's an articulation thing...same way cops set up roadblocks but they are suddenly legal because the name was changed to 'road check'

*edit....worked as a mechanic (master tech) and a plumber (journeyman) for a while....specific answers are required on the tests.....

My AA is better than 50 years old, (a 921 electric) and it still works like a charm! I've had to replace the cord but that's it. All of the AA's I've seen have a built in safety plug, the newer ones are a little rubber plug you just stick back in the hole. The older ones (including mine) have a plug that needs total replacement if it blows. It would be really dumb to decide that ANY pressure cooker does not need supervision. If AA's are treated with respect, they are generally safe and will perform for your lifetime!

You can also use the lid rigs on the bottom as spacers.
