Rye v. WBS v. Other
    #15949971 - 03/15/12 08:04 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Alright, So at this point we have all seen that people get great results from Rye, WBS, and sometimes Popcorn. I have been going to whole foods about once a month and buying 10lbs of rye and just storing even if I dont use it.
The question I am pondering is if there is a more cost effective way to be doing this with rye, or if it would be worth my time to switch to a different spawn.

Basically I know that:
Rye at WF is $0.99/Lb
Grain at Wally World is about $0.99/Lb
Popcorn anywhere is about $0.50/Lb

I know that Popcorn has had mixed results with end product potency, so I wanted to know people's opinion on obtaining rye in larger quantities or switching to WBS - I was reading an older thread and they said whole foods will do 25lb bags of rye cheaper, is there any merit to this? Also someone suggested AzureSupply but It would cost me $60 for 50 pounds which is more than I am paying now. Has anyone found rye seed at Costco/Sams? I know they have bulk products like sugar/flour/salt/some grains. Also does anyone have any experience with finding 50lbs of WBS? I would sort of like to avoid switching at this point, as I have a tek down pat for rye that gets me a fully colonized jar in 2.5 weeks.

Any input on sourcing better alternatives would be great!
Basically I am just getting tired of dumping out half of whole food's bin of rye and having everyone give me a weird look.
Thanks!

A local organic food coop that I use for rye has 50 pound bags in back for about $30.  I have gotten some questions when I pick up that much but if so it's generally a wink and a nod type thing as the people working there may tend to be a little more keyed in on some of its uses.  Once when someone did actually ask why I needed that much I said I was making a mash for rye whiskey.  They seemed satisfied with that answer.

It all depends on where you are.  I can find about $1.00 / lb for rye berries, but some stores sell WBS for around $0.25 / lb.  I've read too many bad things about popcorn, plus the kernels are huge which means you have less surface for mycelium to take hold.  I haven't seen rye or decently priced WBS at Sam's, I've been looking.  Never been to Costco, none in my area.

I haven't ordered from here but this place has a really good shipping charge.  They do by the lb or a 25 lb case for slightly less.  Less than a dollar per lb after shipping if you get two 25 lb cases.

My local Krogers, I can buy a 25lb bag of WBS for $8. That's about $0.32/lb.

I have been buying Rye off Amazon.  Found a seller that sells 25# bags for $27. Not quite a dollar a pound, but they deiver it right to your door. Cheaper if you sign up for a repeat shipment subscription plan.  Best thing is shipping is free. They also sell 50# bags too.

Edt: Oops. had link to flour instead of berries.

I use popcorn with no problems, and potency is just fine.

It all depends where you're at.
I can get 55 lbs of rye for $18.
Where WBS costs me $8 for a 20 lbs.

Check your local farm stores/feed stores. There going to  have the best price.

Beyond price there's the inoculation point factor of the different grains.

WBS has the most inoc points due to having the most kernels per quart.
Rye is second.
Popcorn is last.

I wouldn't recommend anyone using popcorn unless it's for a GLC.

As long as we're at it can someone explain to me why you can't use whole brown rice? It seems like if we use BRF the brown rice kernels would be satisfactory as spawn? Am I missing something? Brown rice is like 5 cents a pound.

the people in this thread explain it, apparently it works it's just that the wet rice is really hard to break up after it's colonized.
