A band to look out for -- The Mars Volta
    #1584751 - 05/28/03 11:41 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Though their debut concept album isn't arriving in stores till June 16th, I have their EP and listened to 8 leaked songs from the CD ... which is entitled Deloused in the Comatorium ...

I think it is possibly the greatest album I have EVER heard ... and I am not a 'favorites' kind of person with music ... the entire time I listened to it I was purely catatonic, in a damn good way ... one of the songs was done so well that I even started leaking tears  :smirk:

.. not kidding ..

The concept of the album is based on dreams that were experienced during a morphine coma (from taking too much ...)

Just thought I would recommend them since a lot of people haven't heard of them yet ...

can you compare them to anything or describe their style at all?

The best way I can put them is sci-fi/psychedelic rock, but with such a style that has NEVER been heard before ... they also incorporate lots of jazz, salsa grooves, arabic-esque stuff, etc etc ... they seamlessly incorporate so many genres of music while keeping a definitive, and unbelievably tight, style ...

You can find leaked tracks, but they aren't remastered, and some aren't even the mars volta at all ... so I'd say wait till their CD is out to give them a listen ...

I have a cable connection at my house (where I have the mp3's), so when I go online later, maybe you can get it through AIM or something ... we'll figure it out ...

I really enjoy At the Drive-In, so I have high hopes for this band...
but damn, the guy dies just before the release of their first album of a drug overdose... what a crappy way to go

wow ... I can't believe that ... =(

the sound is definitely ATDI-residual, but just done so fresh that it's just unbelievable ...

one of the songs, 'concertina', has a really heavy meaning to it:

"We have a song called Concertina, and that song is about one of the people who should probably be in The Mars Volta right now who passed away. He took his own life a long time ago, and it deals with, not necessarily the whole emo thing of "oh I miss you", but this certain friend of ours, his name is Julio Vanegas, he took his life for a certain reason, and someone pushed him over the edge to do it, and I know that person, and this song, to me, is a way of calling out that person and its basically accusing them of killing our friend."

I'm going to ask...would any of their music be considered "depressing"?
reason being, a large percentage of what I listen to is considered "sad" and "depressing" by most people, though it doesn't depress me. I just find it pleasant and rather pretty.

some of the harmonies are so beautiful that they could be considered depressing ... and i know exactly what you mean ...

the songs have extreme emotional feeling to them, but i wouldn't consider them 'sad' ... the album is actually a celebration of life (i guess from surviving the coma) ...

I'm sure I'd enjoy it but... poo  :frown:

They are being hyped by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.. Anthony Kiedis will often mention how Mars Volta are his fave band and I've heard Flea singing their praises. I think they support the chilis on tour. Have listened to some of their stuff and found it a little abstract and abrasive but I haven't listened to all of it so not really in a position to judge. Abstract and abrasive are not necessarily bad, just takes some getting used to..

Yes, they have been touring with the Chilis ...

Completely opposite genres of music, it's interesting that they'd tour together ... the Chili's have been saying that they are really intimidated when playing with the Mars Volta ...

I saw them at Coachella in April. I was right in the very front center for their set and I'd never heard any of their songs before, and they totally blew me away. Awesome band.

What members of ATDI are in Mars Volta? I Loved ATDI! They blew me away the first time I heard them and I can only imagine what they have evolved into now. I remember downloading some Mars Volta mp3s when I first heard about them and I didn't care for it much, but now I think those probably weren't even really them. Can't wait to hear their album!

I've only heard "Concertina"..great song btw. It sounds to me like a mix between Sigur Ros and Radiohead.
