Who can rise to the arithmetic challenge?
    #15824579 - 02/17/12 06:16 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

True or false:

(3t2 + 5)(t2 - 7t + 2) + (t3 + 5t)(2t - 7)

is equivalent to

5t4 -

Physics challenge!!!!!!!!!!!

A proton (q = 1.6 X 10-19 C, m = 1.67 X 10-27 kg) moving with constant velocity enters a region containing a constant magnetic field that is directed along the z-axis at (x.,y) = (0,0) as shown. The magnetic field extends for a distance D = 0.43 m in the x-direction. The proton leaves the field having a velocity vector (vx, vy) = (4 X 105 m/s, 2.1 X 105 m/s).

What is R, the radius of curvature of the motion of the proton while it is in the region containing the magnetic field?

Haha sorry i was gonna post this, but then I figured out how to punch it into wolframalpha.com .

I never finished typing it out here and it somehow published the incomplete post. I'll finish it up for kicks, if anyone wants to try the challenge, but I'm gonna rephrase it.

Here is the modified arithmetic challenge:

(3t2 + 5)(t2 - 7t + 2) + (t3 + 5t)(2t - 7)

What you have to do is rephrase it so there are no parenthesis. In other words, put it in completely seperated terms that are being added to (or subtracted from) each other.

Hell yeah, you got it before I could even finish rephrasing it! Hats off to you, qbe. You are a skilled arithmetician!

(3t2 + 5)(t2 - 7t + 2) + (t3 + 5t)(2t - 7)
=/=
5t4

False.

I think I did it right but I am way too lazy to actually go through the steps here.

EDIT:
Dammit, someone beat me to it while I was figuring it out.

The quickest way to see that its false, without doing any arithmetic at all, is to note that 'answer' is only t to the fourth power.  In the expression you have terms of many powers, thus they are not equivalent.

Yeah, qbe's pretty good. But I had to rephrase it anyway, so it was no longer a true/false question. Maybe I'll post another challenge in the future.. haha

So you're along the same lines as me. I'm an undergrad also, it's kinda like human biology and mechanical engineering smashed together.
