Yes a splassh guard as you call it works excellent. Pf calls it a dual chamber or a drip-sheild.
It actually has several benefits.It allows one to spray a lot of fine mist into the "secondary"chamber which super-humidifies the whole thing. water evaporates from perlite and rises as it tries to escape into the air.
It collects on the top lid.(mine is usually resting lightly on top-no tight seal)
and drips down hitting the deflecting drip-shield. This way you can spray once a day and still maintain good humidity.

you shouldnt get water droplets on the cake, I have heard in some file I read that you can lube the top (lid?) up with vasoline (spelling?) and it will get around this.

Heh. Vaseline...great idea. I installed a PF style splash guard in my terrarium that had this problem, but the vaseline sounds like a great idea...I'll try it next time.
