My first mycellium growth (pic)
    #15750488 - 02/02/12 04:58 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

So I've been planning on starting a P. cubensis grow for a good while now, and I just got 'round to inoculating some PF jars with B+ spores on the 23rd.

There were a few things that could have gone better. I ended up using waaaay too much spore solution (a syringe for 5 jars) and the lid of my glovebox wasn't transparent enough so I had to do it open-air.

The rest of my procedures were as sterile as possible though (gloves wiped down in rubbing alcohol, dust mask, inoculation points wiped down with alcohol, needle sterilized with denatured alcohol flame, etc.), and I think the rest of my mistakes will be rectified as I gain experience.

If anything, the extra spores should speed up colonization, right? The moisture balance wasn't thrown off too much, I did notice some condensation on the walls of the jars but no drops collected at the bottom.

I have the jars sitting in a large closet with a space heater keeping it warm as I live in a fairly cold climate. Anyway, my growth looks like this:

(sorry for bad quality)

All five jars have at least one germination point visible, most have two or three, though some of them are still only small dots. How's this for ~8 days after inoculation? Does my mycellium look right?

1 syringe (im assuming 10cc) for 5 jars isnt that bad.. most people recommend 1cc per jar but 2 isnt going to kill ya

contrary to what you would think, too many spores actually slows down colonization because when their are a bunch close together they have less room to germinate

Really? I heard that more spores means faster colonization because there are more germination points.

I guess it makes sense that they'd be slower if they were all mashed into one place but Idunno.

Be careful with the space heater as it can easily dry out the substrate. Also, ambient light is good for growth and colonization. Contrary to the myth that mushrooms need the dark to grow, they actually benefit from indirect sunlight and room lighting.
And, it has been reported that jars will still colonize in temperatures as low as 50 deg. F. You do not need to incubate them. It may slow down the growth a little, but it is rumored that slow growth helps with potency.

Thanks for the advice. I have one of those "natural daylight" fluorescent bulbs shining in the closet most of the time, so the jars get plenty of ambient light.

I may cut back on the heating, but the closet is really pretty big and I have the jars at one end and the heater at the other so I don't think drying the substrate is TOO big of a concern

It is true more germination points gives you faster colonization however too many will slow it down. So you have to find a point in between.

Yeah, it seems b+ is a common choice for first timers. I'm hoping all that "a cube is a cube" rhetoric is where it's at, I didn't hear all that "bunk+" stuff until after I got my spores.

I'm sure it's just the sort of thing where the dissatisfied minority are more vocal than the rest. Multispore is always a crapshoot and so on.

Theirs nothing wrong with the potency of b+ as you said a cube is a cube. However b+ is verry domesticated it making it more stable and better suited for cultivation subsequently making it popular amongst the new commers
