The pinky toe nail

Was watching Big Lebowski earlier and it got me thinkin. That pinky toe was flawless. I've seen some pinky toes (like mine) where it's like "where the fuck is the toenail?" but not this one. It was flawless! But obviously a fake. That movie is now ruined for me.
Anyways the non toenail which I will refer to as the noenail from here on is probably one of the most revolting things in the world. Why te fuck did the aliens who designed us not make sure that shit would grow right!?
Anyways I'm gonna make this the creepiest thread on the Shroomery. Feel free to post your noenail pics. No I don't have a foot fetish.

The reason your hands turn to "prunes" and get wrinkly when exposed to water is because this helps maintain grip and traction.
Monkey business.

that isnt what happens even remotely.
your cells soak up a ton of water because the surrounding fluid (the water) has less solute in it than your cells.
the increase in every single cells volume adds up and produces wrinkles in your skin.

Morpho said nothing anout the method. He simply provided a reason for this occurrence. But thanks for the info (:

the reason for the occurrence is the flow of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
your body isnt trying to do that shit for traction. it happens to every cell placed in the same scenario, whether it be a human cell (from an organ other than the skin) or a non human cell.

sorry if i came across as hostile. i just hate it when people spew out a bunch of wrong information which to someone who doesnt know better sounds like a perfectly reasonable answer..... and then it snowballs into a pseudo-religion.
it happens all the time in TPE.

I had recently heard about the traction thing somewhere and had to look it up again out of curisity.
I thought this was interesting.
Quote:
Mark Changizi, a theoretical biologist and the study’s lead author, was intrigued by research discounting that belief: Fingers with nerve damage do not form water wrinkles, which suggests a more controlled bodily function. “If it’s neurologically modulated,” Changizi said, “there’s got to be a good reason for it.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/wrinkled-fingers-and-toes-gain-traction-as-an-adaptation-against-slipping/2011/06/30/gIQA7i6c9H_story.html

The theory needs further research, however, before it holds water. Einar Wilder-Smith, a neurologist at the University of Heidelberg, served as a reviewer on the Changizi paper, and believes that wrinkling is a “byproduct of another function,” such as temperature regulation, in which the constriction of blood vessels might lead to shriveled skin. “I would be astonished if it actually improves grip.”
from the same article.
sounds like its just an idea to me right now.
though i will say the hands/fingers not forming wrinkles after nerve damage thing is interesting.

Why is it just in your hands and feet that you get wrinkles? Seems to me if it were a cellular thing it would happen across your whole body.

The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, is made up of cells called keratinocytes, which form a very strong intracellular skeleton made up of a protein called keratin. These cells divide rapidly at the bottom of epidermis, pushing the higher cells upward. After migrating about halfway from the bottom of this layer to the top, the cells undergo a programmed death. The nucleus involutes, leaving alternating layers of the cell membrane, made of lipids, and the inside, made largely of water-loving keratin. The outer layer of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum, is thus composed of these alternating bands.
When hands are soaked in water, the keratin absorbs it and swells. The inside of the fingers, however, does not swell. As a result, there is relatively too much stratum corneum and it wrinkles, just like a gathered skirt. This bunching up occurs on fingers and toes because the epidermis is much thicker on the hands and feet than elsewhere on the body. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=why-do-fingers-wrinkle-in

Rand question... Why's the best method to go about shaving ones balls? I've been vexed for years. I'm afraid one of these cuts are gonna result in my balls circling the drain.

This question has been plaguing mankind since we evolved out of the barbarian days...
I just gingerly stretch them out, try and iron the wrinkles out right... then shave away... Just use some high quality lube and a sharp razor.

Actually it is. You seem so confident all the time, unnecessarily. Instead of just contributing new information to a discussion (which is a polite thing to do), you render it as though you're correcting the situation.
I was referring to the utility of wrinkly fingers. See:
"The common wisdom is that your fingers wrinkle when they’re wet because they absorb water. But Mark Changizi thinks there’s more to it than that. According to him, pruney fingers are an adaptation to help humans, and probably other primates, get a better grip during wet conditions. They act like the rain treads on tyres. Mark lays out his hypothesis in a wonderful paper that I wrote up as a news story for Nature News."
