If doing the doubler boiler type incubator, does the heater have to be fully-submersible?

Put a water heater in a glass container in the middle of your incubator

Say someone did just that and noticed overnight that the water level had went below the line on the heater and is concerned about the heater breaking.. Would puting some plastic wrap partially covering the water container be the remedy?

Are you saying cover the top of the heater, which attaches to the side of the water container also? In theory it could be done w/ a saran quick-cover, hmmm.. Water would collect in the area of the heater top but it does have a cover over the control knob. Would it work...?

Really? The area that the quick-wrap touches on the heater would be the plastic covering for the control knob which doesn't get hot, luke warm but not hot. And if u can put quick-wrap in the mircrowave it has some sort of heat tolerance, you think? I think if one checked the wrap daily accidents could be avoided.

i touched a bit of the glass on my heater that was sticking out of the water (when it was used in a real fish tank) and it was pretty damn hot. i never did let the water evaporate that low again... use your best judgement i guess

It sounds as if buddatwo is talking about a different type of heater than houshroom.

Get a large glass, clear container...something you would put jelly beans in. make sure the jar is big enough to fit in the water heater, and make sure it has a LID-like the screw on type. Cut a small hole in the lid just big enough to pass the wire through 1cm^2. Put the heater in the jar filled with h2o and cover the jar. Place in incubator and kick back wit a fattie

I also tried this method when first setting up my incubator-but got to wet, so I just pulled everything out and used a dry heater pad. A lot safer too, water + electricity just doesn't mix well. So I'm staying dry. But that's just me. :-/ -Mr.Sleep

Quick-cover does keep more moisture in container, but still have to put 1/4c h2o back in about every 6-8 hours. Too much maintenence!! MrSleep- I thought heater pad was unsafe due to fire??
