New tune from Rob K!
    #1562452 - 05/20/03 07:16 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

please check it out on my site:

www.robinkidd.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

It is missing some elements but gives a very good idea the direction I am headed. I'm not going to make a habit of posting new stuff until the whole album's complete, but I liked this quite a lot and couldn't wait to share

Rob

while you listen, spare me a thought because I had to notate this into a musical score so that I could submit it as coursework.. I was up all night, and it took me about 15 hours. Absolutely mindnumbing.  :frown:

right on rob k!

I like it a lot, very chill, nice mood to it.
I think it needs a little more of an atmosphere, more than the bird sounds.  Maybe some drone noises or something.  Are you going for less an electronic sound? If that's the case, there's some cool sustained stuff you could throw through a guitar-mad reverb + echo + flange... etc.  just some thoughts
If not, there's a ton of bad ass electronic stuff i could hear behind the guitars.  I've heard you do it too

I also really like the 7/8 part.
Since you notated it, would you mind revealing the chords that are around 1 minute?  I can hear there's a lot of extension chords and such, I usually get those by experimenting with a position +/- open strings & other frets.  Very rich sounding.

thanks man! glad i got a taste before the whole thing's done

I think it is a bit minimal in general, Rob.. The other works from you that I've heard had a lot more going on than just a couple sounds.

Don't get me wrong, though - what's THERE is awesome; my mind just likes many many layers to get lost in

As I say, it's not completely done yet.. I will be adding more layers to it when I have the time. Also need more RAM cos my computer's starting to struggle with such a huge project.

I know the material is stretched out a little and I will possibly be cutting it down a bit for the final mix. The reason for this is that I had to hand in a composition which is at least 10mins as coursework for my degree. this is the recording I submitted. It was also done in a great hurry- I only started it on friday and it had to be in Monday lunchtime, so there wasn't much time to get clever with production techniques, just pure composition.

When I do the version for the album I'm going to add things to it to make it a bit more "psychedelic" sounding (whatever that means these days) which would not have been appropiate in the context of an undergraduate assignment. I was discouraged from using synthetic sounds by my lecturer because he dismisses it as nothing more than "ear candy" and I'm angling for good marks here, not something that will make the examiner go "this would be great to trip out to!"

Also, in the context of the album, it will be followed up by music that is a *lot* more trippy and synthetic- stuff to warp your head. The album is going to be a "journey" and all journeys need a starting point.

So fear not.. the album version will kick major ass!

blastrid.. I'll get that notation out later- in a bit of a rush at the moment. do you want guitar tab or music notation?

umm isn't music supposed to be ear and brain candy? lol your teacher is a weirdo.

Be sure to keep me updated - as you get closer to a final version I will probably have more stuff to say about it

awesome, that is definitely where this song needs to go. More texture, more layers, more atmosphere, more 'Ear Candy'.

As for the notation, standard would be helpful for theoretical purposes, but to understand how you'd play it, tablature would be better. thanks man!

Yeah it's annoying.. he just means using weird sound effects and arpeggiators etc that don't involve any actual compostional skill- you just hit a note and the synth does all the work for you.

He's actually a really cool guy.. used to be INXS's producer!

you have to do a bunch of work on the synth before it "does all the work for you" heh machines can't just automatically 'hey do the work for me machine,' you have to show it what work its going to do.... maybe he's just jealous that back in his day people had to play real instruments in realtime

I'd love to hear your stuff Rob, it's just that I have a slow connection and no sound.
