Please ask these kind of questions to NASA.

LOL! I would imagine the shrooms would have a lot harder of a time figuring out which way is up (a lot is due to a gravotropic response.) Don't see any other problems, though.

Here's an even tougher one -- you know what would happen to the bubbles in beer in zero gravity? I read something about this once....

This is an experiment I did a long time ago. I couldn't find any references on gravitropism in mushroom fruiting, and thought that upside down casings would prevent CO2 buildup on the surface [it should just 'fall off']. I put a little casing on a rack inside of an inverted rubbermaid with some perlite trays on the bottom. No fanning, just a tiny crack at the bottom. The light source was underneath. It pinned and fruited just fine, and the fruits grew straight toward the light; just until the veils became thin. At that point they turned upward [away from the light].
I still think there's something to it, needs experimenting.

It makes me wonder what effect zero gravity would have, though. Based on this experiment, there is something gravity-related.

w/o gravity, I imagine you would get some very interesting looking mushrooms. They might not even pin, imo.. They wouldn't know which way to pin towards!

I'll try to find it again but I ran across a mention of something relating to astro-shrooms a week or two ago....didnt read it or save it because I dont see me ever needing to go into space.....until I eat a few....

This is what happens to beer (or any other carbonated beverage) in space.

They may respond to gravity because they have to drop spores. Hard to drop things up... That pic you posted gives me an interesting idea on spore collection though. Could you just grow a cake like that, let the mushrooms drop their spores and use that for furthur inoculation?

Plants typically are tuned into gravity in at least some way. IT would be counterproductive to their survival as a species to do otherwise. Most chlorophyl containing, standard plants actually grow into a globe in space, roots, leaves and everything. Perhaps the mycelium would grow into a rounded ball... ?

That's what I was trying to determine; It's much more obvious with a plant. If you take a seed and germinate it in the soil, allowing it to start to germinate, and then flip the seed container, the seed will still turn around and start growing in the right direction. Pretty much through the life cycle of plants there is a gravitropic response. Now with mushrooms the issue isn't quite as clear. Reading through TMC/GGMM there is no information on this. If you lay out Stamets' parameters for fruiting, the upside down trays appear to fit the scheme.
Since the fruits grew well in the presence of *negative* gravity [upside down] toward the light source, and only corrected themselves after cap development, this implies the gravitropism only kicks in after a certain degree of differentiation in the cap tissue.
