Habitat: 3 batches just found growing in my backyard at the base of a dying plum tree. Two of the batches are young, the other, quite old.
Gills: White, attached, partial veil
Stem: 10-15cm long X 4cm diameter, whitish, turns brown when rubbed, fibrous, solid, with ring. Older bunch has yellow stain at the bottom.
Cap: 7-12cm diameter, brown, tiny dark fibers from the top, convex
Spore print color: White
Bruising: None
Other information: Smells good. Older batch shown first.

I think that you are only supposed to eat the caps, not too much of them at that, only very well cooked. You might get some stomach discomfort, sorry maybe I should have mentioned that before.

I didn't realize my advise would make you eat them.

I was already leaning towards trying them. I posted them on mushroomobserver.org & nobody said they weren't, after I guessed that they were a. Mellea. On that site, if you guess right, nobody responds. I've been seeing them all over town here & have been researching them for the last week. I was already 99% sure, you just confirmed for me..

Good thinking and way to do your homework. Next time you might want to wait for a trusted identifier to confirm it because people like me for instance have been wrong many times in the past and I would hate to give someone some bad advise and they end up kill themselves.

BUT....just because no one said differently on MO doesn't mean your guess is correct...Sometimes I have things wrong there and it takes weeks, months, etc. for the right person to come along and correct me. I'm not arguing your ID, just a caution to you to be careful was all.

I posted a picture of some gymnopilus on OM and called them Gymnopilus oregonensis which is a species that hasn't been found since 1911, I seriously doubt that's what they are but no one corrected me. That site kinda sucks for promptness some times.

I have trouble with patience also. I love MO though, I've learned so much there! You aren't going to get a quick response there sometimes...no one person knows all about every mushroom..ya know?
If you really want to grab prompt attention on MO, call your Gymnopilus an Amanita and see how quick people are to fix that!!!

It's funny how that works, it's like if some can easily prove you wrong they are more then eager to help or correct you.

armellariella is a pretty safe species to eat so long as; 1) they are clearly growing on wood 2) they have a white sporeprint I've never got a bellyache from them

Yesterday was the first time I tried them, they were very good, relatives of shiitakes. I consulted a friend & he told me that since I have a ton of them, I should dry the caps. He says they taste better dried, it concentrates the flavor.

So all Armillaria are good? I've always passed them up because I'm no good at narrowing down the species. Are they all considered Honey mushrooms?

According to rogersmushrooms.com only 3 of the 8 species listed are edible.
