capless shrooms
    #15500612 - 12/11/11 04:23 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Almost 90% of my mushrooms have grown without caps. There are gills but no caps. This somewhat normal? Ok to consume?

Pics!  That sounds awesome.  Just a normal mutation, I'm sure.  They should be fine to eat.  But I really want to see a picture. :awesome:

Tim, can you give more details of your grow?

Are you working with BRF cakes?  Are these strange fruits growing from all the cakes?

What kind of light are you providing?  What kind of fruiting chamber are you using?

I wouldn't recommend eating a mushroom unless it's been properly identified.

These are brf cakes. Yes there growing from all the cakes. The lighting is a 16" florescent under counter light over a SGFC. It's located in a small closet next too my hot water heater. Could lack of sufficient FAE cause this? I bought this syringe from a trusted vendor on this site. The variety of cube is "God Seekers". Some did have caps, but most were long and did not grow with caps. I misted 3 times a day and fanned 4-5 times a day.

Here's a link to some pics of God Seekers on BRF: God Seekers Pics
The ones on his cake look normal, but notice the abnormal one in the OP's avatar pic.

ps: Ignore what Dudester67 said; eat 'em.

Do you know the color temperature of that fluorescent light?  And how many hours is the light on each day?

4-5 manual fannings a day is plenty especially in a SGFC,  that shouldn't cause this problem, even in a closet.

If this is happening to fruits on every cake then it's gotta be an environmental issue, I'm just not sure what...  Possibly the wrong spectrum of light?  You didn't spray anything weird on them did you?

And in the pic, I see one long thin shroom and a flat one that looks like a banana peel, which do most of your fruits resemble?

Anyway sorry this is happening, it's very weird.

It could just be the genetics of the strain. Some strains have a genetic predisposition to produce albino fruits. Some even look like penises, all due to genetics.

I do not know the temp of the light. But they were on a 12 on 12 off schedule. And no I didn't spray them with anything other than sterile water. And most of the fruits were thin and long. The ones with caps looked exactly like the ones in Phoenix post. Eat em?

If Tim used a multispore syringe then each cake would produce a unique strain of cubensis, possibly multiple strains.  Since all of his cakes are effected with this cap problem, the problem is most likely environmental, most probably due to spectrum of light but I'm not sure.

And there is no such thing as "God Seekers," it's just a random race of cubensis and someone wrote a silly name on the syringe.  To provide a link to someone else's "God Seekers" grow is pretty... dumb?

Tim,  even a cube syringe can produce contaminant species.  I'd poke them and make sure they bruise blue, then it's most likely mutant cubensis which you can eat.

For someone to simply see that photo without any background info on the grow and tell you to chomp down is a person who may not have your best interests at heart.

May I ask if you used Lysol or any other petroleum based air sterilizers in your grow area during or before birthing?

If you'd look at the picture you just quoted, you'd see there's some obvious blueing.
