Hopefully you picked it so you can answer questions about it.

What kinds of trees were nearby?

Could you cut it in half vertically and show us what the inside looks like?

It's possible that it's Gyromitra esculenta, but the stem and cap look much smoother than normal for that species. If it is, then it's a very young specimen.

If it were fall I would say it's Gyromitra infula, which fruits in spring in California.

If it was growing under hardwoods, it could be Gyromitra brunnea.

All of these species should be considered poisonous, potentially fatally so. Do not eat those or give them to other people who might.

Let us know.

Happy mushrooming!

Without seeing some stuff under a microscope we won't be 100% certain, but I'll give the award to DethHed for his rapid identification of Gyromitra esculenta. The cap is unusually unwrinkled for that species, suggesting that you've found a specimen that's really young (you cradle robber).

This species has caused numerous fatalities and should not be eaten. You may know some people who eat it and they will probably tell you that you just have to know how to prepare it properly. To those people I will give Dr Alexander H Smith's response: "The German expert on Russula died of eating those. I think he knew how to prepare them."

Mitchnast, that's the gnarliest one I've ever seen. I've seen the species a few times myself and it usually looks pretty close to the photos at MykoWeb or a bit less convoluted. Yours looks so dark in that photo that for a moment I though you were showing a really large, impressive Helvella lacunosa. Very nice.

Happy mushrooming!
