Tripping at Bombay Beach, The Salton Sea
    #15477464 - 12/06/11 10:00 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

So my chick and I are going to Bombay Beach at The Salton Sea. Going to see all that crazy shit on two hits each and camp out in a tent after for the night. We are going on Thursday because it is my birthday, seems like its gonna be a good time

Anyone ever been here before?

Any thoughts on this

you should have gone to anza borrego desert instead and camped in the badlands. i'll be there in march for an art show. there's a little fish that lives in the desert springs out there and is endemic to that area only, pretty amazing really.

i have not been to bombay beach, but i decided that the salton sea smells like death, as it is dead. there are huge flocks of pelicans in the area though that would be beautiful to watch flying while tripping. seriously though, borrego springs and anza borrego desert is one of the nicest places i've ever been. if you do go, research it first, because there are so many trails and roads to explore, and there are places for ohrv and places they're not allowed. i can't wait to be down there.

i just looked at some pictures of the place. it is pretty cool looking, a ghost town covered in a salt crust. definitely take a camera! it's interesting to see how nature reclaims old ghost towns, especially in a place so extreme as the salton sea. quite a bit different from the natural desert and rock formations in borrego.

joshua tree is pretty cool, but not quite as nice as i expected. the coolest area is the cholla forest, but when i drove through, there was nowhere to park and there were hundreds of people there. i drive a large truck with a trailer though, so a normal car could probably get parked. other than that, it was just a nice drive through the desert.

anza borrego is the shit. I remember going camping and hiking there as a kid. There are some epic springs/oasis's.

My memory of the Salton sea is going there to swim and the water being so nasty that nobody would go in.

cholla forest is the main attraction stop in the middle of joshua tree national park. also, if you're into driving a few hours east(exit 222 on I10), stop at the chuckwalla/ironwood prisons and drive past onto wiley's well, coon hollow, and milpita's wash roads. it takes you out into some ancient extinct volcanoes where you can dig for geodes, thundereggs, fire agate, psilomelane mines, and many other cool stones. the palo verde wilderness is out there too. it has some pretty cool cliff dwelling caves that are now inhabited by mountain lions.
