Horsemeat inspection ban lifted in U.S.

TULSA, Okla. -- Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption after Congress quietly lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, and activists say slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month.
Slaughter opponents pushed a measure cutting off funding for horse meat inspections through Congress in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Barack Obama signed into law Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December.
It did not, however, allocate any new money to pay for horse meat inspections, which opponents claim could cost taxpayers $3 million to $5 million a year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture would have to find the money in its existing budget, which is expected to see more cuts this year as Congress and the White House aim to trim federal spending.
The USDA issued a statement Tuesday saying there are no slaughterhouses in the U.S. that butcher horses for human consumption now, but if one were to open, it would conduct inspections to make sure federal laws were being followed. USDA spokesman Neil Gaffney declined to answer questions beyond what was in the statement.
The last U.S. slaughterhouse that butchered horses closed in 2007 in Illinois, and animal welfare activists warned of massive public outcry in any town where a slaughterhouse may open.
"If plants open up in Oklahoma or Nebraska, you'll see controversy, litigation, legislative action and basically a very inhospitable environment to operate," predicted Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive of The Humane Society of the United States. "Local opposition will emerge and you'll have tremendous controversy over slaughtering Trigger and Mr. Ed."
But pro-slaughter activists say the ban had unintended consequences, including an increase in neglect and the abandonment of horses, and that they are scrambling to get a plant going – possibly in Wyoming, North Dakota, Nebraska or Missouri. They estimate a slaughterhouse could open in 30 to 90 days with state approval and eventually as many as 200,000 horses a year could be slaughtered for human consumption. Most of the meat would be shipped to countries in Europe and Asia, including France and Japan.
Dave Duquette, president of the nonprofit, pro-slaughter group United Horsemen, said no state or site has been picked yet but he's lined up plenty of investors who have expressed interest in financing a processing plant. While the last three slaughterhouses in the U.S. were owned by foreign companies, he said a new plant would be American-owned.

So what? If someone wants to eat a horse they'll find a way to eat a horse regardless of the law.
Also, why even ban it to begin with? You know pigs are the smartest animal on a farm? If only the pig looked like the horse, he'd finally be safe. Good thing they look so fucking ugly or else we'd feel bad about slaughtering them on a mass scale!

I think it's stupid that they were banned from being slaughtered in the first place.

I used to live a few miles from the last horse slaughtering place that closed in IL in 2007.
None of the horse meat was being sold in the US.
It was all sent overseas.
I'd like to try horse sometime. I bet they taste pretty good.
People should stop caring about what other people eat.

I personally can't believe deer are hunted like they are. They are like puppy dogs with big skinny legs. I think its pretty fucked up that they can be hunted myself. So peaceful, so calm. The only Hunter I was a fan of was followed by a S. Thompson

People who hunt their own meat are far more ethical than people who buy meat from a store. At least the deer has a chance to outrun/outwit the hunter. They are also more ethical than vegan fags who eat mass amounts of soy, a cash crop directly correlated to tropical deforestation.

Is this really what our lawmakers are focusing on?
All the changes that need to be made, and we make it to "ok, you can eat horse meat now"
Thanks congress! *sarcastic smile smiley face*

Actually, the more time they spend on this type of thing, the less time they have to fuck us financially.

Nope. It's them having time to spend debating bullshit like the "porkulous" bill, "healthcare" and other ways to spend money we don't have that fucks us.
The best Congress, is a divided Congress.

The best Congress, is a divided Congress.
So you're saying that not coming up with a solution to healthcare (medicare/aid), social security and other problems that eat up our money and instead spending time debating bills like this is more important?
Right. You know what, you're so right. We should just leave things as is, that is obviously the right thing to do.

You do realize Hunter S. Thompson was big on hunting right?
From an economical standpoint this will raise the worth of horses. People have been giving horses away because the market is so worthless. Now that the slaughterhouses will re-reopen the value of horses will rise.
Also, because it has been illegal to slaughter horses in the U.S., they just get shipped to Mexico to be hacked up where they are treated far less 'humanely'.
Not defending or attacking the decision, just wanted to make those points.
I don't care to eat horse meat, but I do enjoy deer as the meat is far more lean than beef..

There should be no (and will be no) national healthcare. We can't afford it and Broodsow Sally, Cigarette Slim and many others deserve none of my money. It's a state issue, not a federal one.
There should not be (and won't be) social security. The money is long spent and it was a foolish Ponzi scheme from the start. People should plan for their retirement, rather than trust the Fed's, who have fucked up virtually every thing they've ever done. Save your money, don't spend so much on cars, drugs, booze and video games. It's called personal responsibility, something Americans suck at for the last several decades.
Those are the things that wrongly eat up our money. The horsemeat bill cost us nothing.
And no, leaving them as they are isn't the right thing to do. Reverting back to the way they were would be best for a great many things the Fed's wrongly involve themselves in.
