Does ziplock bags let some gas exchange? or its good for years of storage?
    #15386189 - 11/17/11 09:02 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Im thinking of storing fine chopped, crack dry mushrooms (dried with dramprid) on ziplock bags with almost no air, trying to do a vaccum inside before sealing it.

i also read that plastic bags let some gas exchange, and let oxigen inside the bag,,

but maby ziplock bags are made from better plastic, that dont let gas exchange,,

its this a good way to store dryed mushrooms for years?

thankss!

If you freeze or at least refrigerate them then the oxygen won't be able to degrade your actives as easily.

Actually not everyone was a noob.  Being a noob is a very new phenomenon.  Many people, the great majority in fact, were simply "beginners", "novices" or "new to mushroom growing".  Being a "noob" is reserved, and in fact created specifically for and by, the newer, much more lame generations coming about.

Ziplock bags allow some gas exchange.  Everyone who has kept pot in them knows how fast their weed dries out.

Zip-Loc bags are like fine woven plastic. They do breathe to some degree. I would suggest getting a Food Saver or something.

RR, but you said 3 years ago that :

Vacuum is the best way to store dried mushrooms, whether you use jars or vacuum-sealed bags. They will last for years, while maintaining original potency.

I have no freezer, so what do i do to store them for years with minimum potency loss,,,  chopped/powder cracked dry mushrooms into vaccum ziplock?

Does your food stay fresh forever in the fridge in a ziplock?

He said vacuum sealed bag.  That doesn't mean ziplock necessarily.  Sometimes our consumer-driven minds automatically narrow and associate things to products.  I blame all the damn advertising. -.-  Anyway, there are different types of bags that are better for sealing.  I think even those oven bags work okay if you do it right, but I haven't tried to seal anything in this way, so I'd probably default on the jars.  Any plastic you can find that you can create a seal with will work though, so long as you have it layered and thick.  You could make sealed bricks of mushrooms.  (and ship them down to mexico to see how they like bricks)

true, vacum sealed bag is not necesary a ziplock, ..

so a glass jar tight sealed full of mushroom powder will not deteriorate potency after a year?

No sir.  That'd probably be one of the safest ways to ensure it lasts.
