one quick question.. if im making a straw log or cake and putting the straw and grain spawn in a plastic bag and mixing it and wut not. does the plastic bag need to b a special plastic bag or can i use basically any clear plastic garbage bag..and do i need to sterilize the bag some how first?? or does it really matter. I know the methods im jus hazy on wether or not i can use jus any normal clear garbage bag?
thx

i would use a non-transparent bag if it were me. you dont want any light getting in there during that stage. or are you just mixing your substrate and spawn in this bag and have another container in mind?

ok, i would def not use a clear bag then. well, i guess you could just as long as you always kept it in the dark.
to each their own but i would rather go ahead and place the sub/spawn in my final container. that way there is less trauma to the mycelium and less steps you the grower has to take.
but like i said before, everybody has their own style and i encourage ppl to try new and original things as this is how the myco culture evolves and improves upon itself.
good luck!

i would think so.. you might wanna give the bag a quick spray with lysol or some kind of disinfectant

Clear bags are fine. Myc benefits from indirect sunlight or CFL light at every stage of growth.
I would not spray your bag with lysol. Especially if it is perforated and has your sub/spawn in it already. It will cause harm to the myc and possible mutations in your fruits down the road.
When I was doing poly straw bags I would use them new and just wipe with iso alcohol and let them dry, stuff using layers, and then seal off and stab a bunch with a flamed metal skewer (let it cool so you don't melt the bags )
And for OP's first question, you can use whatever bag you like as long as it holds up. Some trash bags (esp. clear ones) are really thin and the straw can tear them up pretty good. If you can avoid that problem then you are good.
Sounds like you are on the right track. And you can just cut them out and toss them in the FC of your choice.

are you sure? i always read that during the incubation stage no light is needed.

Yes. I have seen so many threads that you have had or given poor info today. dtowntoker pointed it out and you referred to him as 'one of those guys'. I'm not a big fan of him myself, but he was right. You have a lot of reading to do. IDK if you have just been out of this hobby for a long time (many things have changed with new information) or just starting, but read up here for a bit. No intention to flame, I know you are trying to help, but in some threads I have seen today you haven't been
Light is not needed but it is beneficial. And in the other thread, coir is a great sub, verm is nutritious to an extent by providing minerals that myc uses.

This is incorrect both times. Mycelium benefits from ambient light during colonization and the mycelium should be on a normal day/night light schedule from day of inoculation for best results.
Don't spray plastic with Lysol and then put grow media in it. The plastic need not be sterile, but if you buy poly tubing from U-line, it's sterile or nearly so off the roll due to the high temperature during manufacture. RR

i guess its possible that its outdated
thx for the corrections guys, sorry if i meslead anyone but as i said this came from paul staments

Paul himself doesn't colonize in darkness any more. In fact, his colonizing rooms are lit 12/12 with 6500K fluorescent lamps. We're all still learning, and hopefully always will be. RR

i agree, and again sorry if i was misleading some of the newer ppl to mycology. i know that this field of science progresses very quickly. i guess i just didnt realize how quickly lol.
so, there are no issues with primordia forming early with this method? ive been out of the loop for a couple years now and just getting back into things...

Nope, generally if they form early it's too much fae or a contamination that causes the myc to try and fruit before taken over or because of the contam it figures it's the end of it's usable substrate.
And it's fine. Like I said, I wasn't trying to flame you. The things people did years ago still work. It's just discovering what works better or best. And I appreciate you trying to help in this community. Just brush up a bit on some stuff
