What to use to heat scalpel?
    #15149851 - 09/28/11 09:34 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

So I've been having poor luck with alcohol lamps because:
1. Flame keeps burning out during work.
2. Takes quite long to heat blade.
3. Puny flame.
4. Inconsistent flame as air circulation (from the flow hood) in clean room blows it around.

I decided to try a plumbing torch. I got one for like $15 and it works AWESOME! It heats the blade in like a second.

The only thing is that I read on the warning label that burning it produces carbon monoxide, and it's not to be used indoors. I definitely don't want that kind of exposure, especially in a tiny sealed room.

What else can I use as a good heat source?

Yeah, good idea!
Where do they sell them?
And can I get ones that sustain a flame on their own?

I just put it under my arm for a minute to warm it up.

as long as you don't use the propane torch for too long, it will not build up carbon monoxide. i've used it for a half hour in my bathroom and it works fine and i have a tiny bathroom.

i wouldn't worry about it.

No, I'd rather not.

I guess I'll just check the hardware store or something.

I use a propane torch.  I just turn the flame down between heatings.  Never had a problem.  The flowhood moves the air around enough.  Hey, if the Lysol hasn't killed me, the carbon monoxide's not going to. ;-)

First off propane doesn't produce carbon monoxide in an area that has sufficient oxygen supply, carbon monoxide is a byproduct of incomplete combustion like this 2 C3H8 + 7 O2 → 2 CO2 + 2 CO + 2 C + 8 H2O + heat you will notice a lot of soot if there is not enough oxygen. When there is enough oxygen you will not have to worry about carbon monoxide C3H8 + 5 O2 → 3 CO2 + 4 H2O + heat. But always try to be in an open atmosphere, which while collecting samples with a scalpel can be difficult.

There are small hot plates and electrical coils that produce enough heat to destroy all contamination. One solution I have seen a long time ago was to use small motorcycle or other small battery to create a current between the metal of the scalpel blade which will heat it to a glowing red, the best part about this is you can usually recharge the batteries and use them over and over again. Another good solution is to buy sterile scalpels online from a medical supply store, they are usually rather inexpensive.

If you want a good clean burn you should use a butane torch. Get the big fat ones rather then the long skinny ones. Or just get one for disposable cylinders. Make sure you store the cylinder someplace safe in case they leak.
