Yes, remove the filters when innoculating. It's not 100% necessary, but it's a good idea.

I wouldn't reccomend using coffee filters, all my jars got contamed. Go with tyvek. EDIT: Don't remove the filter, just insert the syringe at the very edge up against the glass. The metal bands will cover the holes. Removing the bands makes the possibility of getting contams much higher. Unless you're working under a flow hood.

Absolutley, go with tyvek for gas exchange. But according to 6T's WBS tech. you may want to place coffee filters over your lids while PCing, and cooling. Then remove, and innoculate as usual.

If your straight with the poly-fill, use that. If you feel like making a trip for free Tyvek, go to your local post office. Just grap a handfull of the American Express envelopes that say "DuPont Tyvek" on the back. Cut them to fit over your jars and you're good to go.

Tyvek or Poly-Fill. No need to use both.

Are the Tyvek envelopes actually free? Nothing is free these days.

Tyvek filter under the lid , coffee filters as an exterior dust cover over the lid & rubber banded down. Tyvek is the internal primary filter, coffee filters are an external dust cover, just to keep airborn crap & dirty hands from fouling the lid & internal filter. Use two (2) holes in the lid. Remove coffee filters & innoc through one (1) hole, then tape it over. Then, replace coffee filters. 6T

I hear ya. LOL..........
Never understood why some folks risk 3 weeks worth of work, trying to save $1 on Lysol, $0.10 cents worth of alc, another $1 on gloves & another on a mask.
That's not even $5 & you risk.............what? (not a Q?).

The airborne contaminates floating around will not be caught by a coffee filter. Its like... (dare i quote one of the best mycologist of all time?)
... trying to catch a mosquito with a barbed wire fence.
you should buy filters, or tyvek, and use polyfil.
