Ythan? SSL for everyone, not just supporters?

I notice most sites have SSL for everyone, even google SSL beta. I was wondering if we could have that here? Would it be too much of a burden on the server? Most supporters give because they love the site, not the SSL option. I know plenty about online privacy and SSL would be beneficial for everyone. Youtube, facebook, wikipedia, etc etc all have SSL. Anyways, perhaps you could test it and see if the server can handle SSL for everyone. I plan on renewing my supporter account even if SSL is free for everyone, because of the email address, the colored username, and some other options like pictures being full sized.
Thanks man, please consider it.

I've already tested and our current setup can't handle it. Once the new servers are online they'll be behind a load-balancer with hardware SSL acceleration and we may be able to offer this feature for everyone.

Well yeah with a good VPN your fine ..but like I said ssl can be easily stripped You can't just leave it to ssl alone..because at this point pretty much all black hats Know how to get around ssl and as for banks I have gained acceses to many accounts by Stripping ssl.... Legally of course
ssh tunnel through a socks sever or a encrypted ssh connection and Then I would say it's safe

Well we have the new servers now and we have for a while. I just need to get off my ass and finish setting them up.
There will be a lot of technical improvements with the new setup, but the average user will notice two things:
1) Improved performance. Ie. no more of those 20 second delays when loading a page - everything should be virtually instantaneous (more specifically, limited by your own bandwidth).
2) Improved availability. No more Curveball at 4am, no more site going down for days at a time due to hardware failures, no more random downtime when Apache decides to take a square shit. Everything is redundant and load balanced.
Plus two bonus features:
3) More reliable backups. I won't accidentally delete a week's worth of posts ever again.
4) New functionality which was not practical before can now be considered, ie. SSL for everyone, as ID suggested.
I really need to suck it up and work on this more, but it's slow going, tedious, and not very rewarding.
