Is anyone else out there always on the prowl for new and interesting documentaries that will change the shape of your brain from a brain into a brain with balls?
And I don't just mean drugs, I mean other stuff. Military, civil rights, politics, financial, animals, religion and let's not forget conspiracies and UFOs, there will be lots of those! Even if they're bullshit, I have to watch them.
Fuck movies, fuck TV, fuck the radio. Saaaave the documentaries!

Documentaries are pretty much the only reason I'm hanging on to my Netflix account.
They've got a pretty awful selection of Instant movies, but they've got quite a bit of decent docs.

You might dig this.

A thread I made some time ago with a few documentaries. Hopefully most of the links still work.

I agree with the netflix statement, they're overall selection is horrible. The documentaries on there are great.

technocalypse is a very eye opening doc on current technologies and their future development. Lots of interesting footage.
a good social-cultural doc is 'the third world war'.
another interesting doc is called 'the iceman'. its about an hour long interview with a mafia hitman. pretty dark.
the classic lsd documentary by bbc 'the beyond within'.

The Bridge was pretty interesting.
Quote:
The Bridge is a 2006 documentary film by Eric Steel that tells the stories of a handful of individuals who committed suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004. The film was inspired by an article entitled "Jumpers," written by Tad Friend appearing in The New Yorker magazine in 2003.
The Bridge focuses on the large number of suicides that occur each year at the Golden Gate Bridge, capturing footage of the suicides and interviewing family members. Also interviewed are people who have attempted suicide at the bridge, witnesses of the suicides and a jump survivor.
The movie was shot with multiple cameras pointed at a notorious suicide spot on the bridge during 2004. It captured 19 people as they took their final plunge, and then offers interviews with grieving families.

Same. Though I only watch a few specific kinds of docs. I can't bear to watch the ones about aliens and such. I agree with the guys that mainly use netflix for documentarys. I only occasionally use it to watch movies. I saw Exit Through The Gift shop (its about street art/graffiti) recently and I thought it was pretty interesting. Modify (body modification) was another goody. Sick and disturbing. But interesting.
-------------------- "I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

netflix has the well produced dox. but the (imo) better ones aren't necessarily promoted too well.

I 'highly' recommend The Union: The Business Behind Getting High.
Amazing documentary that disproves a lot of common myths about marijuana.

About a year ago I'd watch a new documentary every day.
I haven't watched any good ones in a while though. I'll have to check out some of the mentioned ones in this thread.

that's pretty much all i watch (doc's); bbc, pbs, pbs: nova and some stuff off tv that i find on torrent and random films. i love (real) sci fi, drama and some animated stuff if it's well done and a few action movies here and there (warren ellis' "red" was a riot), but for the most part the only thing that really holds my attention is educational stuff.
one thing i will say though, is that you have to have your b/s sensors at full attention. bbc and pbs, especially nova, are pretty reputable, but there's some stuff out there that's just utter bullshit.

I recommend:
Noam Chomsky - Manufacturing Consent Noam Chomsky - The Corporation The Truth and Lies of 911 - 2001 w/Michael Ruppert Fog of War - Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara No End in Sight - 2007
I haven't watched them yet, but I heard these are good:
God Grew Tired of Us - 2006 Brilliant Moon - Glimpses of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
Also, if you haven't seen the 3 Zeitgeist films, they are worth watching, IMO.
Most of these are political because that's what I've been interested in lately. I really like documentaries on all types of subjects, though. I simply posted these because I have them on my hard drive right now. I'll post again as I remember other ones that I've watched and deleted. I need to get an external HD so that I can just keep all my movies .

Life and Planet Earth are two series I definitely reccommend watching. They're so good
I saw a 2 part documentary a while ago on BBC4 called Everything and Nothing, which was hosted by Jim Al-Khalili. I don't know if you'll be able to find it anywhere, but it was really good. It's about all kinds of theoretical physics.
The Universe is really good; that's often on History.
Tribe with Bruce Parry is also a wicked series, I think it's called Going Tribal or something in the States. Dude goes around to loads of different tribal cultures and lives with them. He takes ayahuasca, iboga and a couple other psychedelics with the shamans too
