Can you use an ip blocker to avoid legal trouble when downloading torrents?
    #14711860 - 07/03/11 04:53 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Cuz one time i got a letter threatening to sue if i download anymore torrents and it scared the shit outta me. One of my friends said he heard of someone using an ip blocker for that.

Anyone know anything about this?

There are tools to hide your IP from other peers, but I don't think you can hide your IP or your downloading activities from your own ISP.

Damn, sometimes I'll be simultaneously downloading 3/4 games and 5/6 movies at once.

Generally the only people who have been sued are people who are downloading/seeding extremely large amounts of copyrighted files.  It's pretty rare though with the number of people pirating things on the internet, most of it is intimidation.

Sometimes ISP's will give you warnings about downloading large amounts of illegal material though, but the majority of people never have a problem with it.

How can you block your own ISP short of unplugging your internet?  Honest question.  PB and PG use a blacklist/whitelist scheme that's always getting updated.  It blocks connections to any DNS that is known to be anti-piracy.

Yeah honestly without some advanced computer knowledge the average user isn't going to be effectively able to COMPLETELY block their information. It does help somewhat to have those programs, but it doesn't mean complete neutrality.
