I'll start us off with World of Warcraft... Plenty of room to explore and tons of trippy environments such as, my personal favorite, Zangarmarsh.
You can choose any game world you like, and any environment... this isn't limited to World of Warcraft. Be creative and think outside the box, let's hear some crazy ones!
Add some pictures if possible

Also guess I should clarify that I'm talking about a game-world and environment preferably but not limited to a 3D RPG with some really nice visuals. Here's another example.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

Bulletstorm.
And of course, you can't go past Bioshock.

Great screenshots Jufin
I remember Morrowind, and Oblivion was mind-blowing as well... Can't wait for Skyrim, I have very high expectations for that one!

I'll re-install Amnesia: The Dark Descent some time, let myself go crazy as fuck and play through it to get some good screens for you guys. All the screens I find online don't do it justice; they don't spoil the really freaky parts and they're all clear-headed.
It's a game where you're alone, trapped in a castle, with Amnesia. As you descend into it's lower antechambers you learn you were involved in some African dig, and cursed by an artifact. Or at least that's what I gleaned from it. It's all very "you've got a non-stop concussion" so, there's interpretation to it. Someone must have lead the path briefly before you and left a trail of journal pages with candles. As you proceed, voices fill your head-sometimes your own. Fragments of memory flooding back- you've walked these steps before and not alone.
Anyway you quickly find out you're being followed by some kind of evil... force. You find out that prior to waking up, you had been searching for help. Apparently this ghastly curse has been haunting you for some time, and not only that, but it has been killing everyone who might be able to explain in disturbing ways. That was, until one of your letters received a one-line reply- "I know, I can help. Come to Castle Brennenburg"
That's only spoilerish on a hook level, it gets worse as you descend into the castle's disturbing dungeon. Torture is involved- you hear the screams of dead and dying ghosts, a monstrous apparition stalks you, seemingly precipitating out of thin air to trap you cowering in every dark corner. A disturbing plot evolves, you are being used, but you find out far too late. Paranoia haunts you. Bugs crawl across your camera and then disappear, and your ears feed you a constant bone-crunching noise. Gusts of wind seem to come form nowhere and blow out all the lights, leaving you in darkness.
You're the game's bitch the entire time. If you're in the light you stay sane, your vision clear and the noises quelled- but if they apparition chasing you can see you he becomes very real and will stop at nothing to disembowel you. If you hide in the dark you slowly go insane, your vision twisting and blurring, your heart pounding.
This is the only game I have ever played that honestly completely depended on it's atmosphere and succeeded 100% in my opinion. I wouldn't suggest ruining it by watching LP's. Play it yourself when you can, preferably in the dark when you're exhausted. It will push you to your wit's end.
EDIT: Accurate concept art of one of the later chambers.
