Popcorn Casing Question

The hooligans have 12 pint, 12 quart, and 8 1/2 pint jars. 4 of them are 80% colonized . They were going to use Roadkill's 60/40 coco/verm. The only thing they didn't know was how much spawn could they put into a casing ? When is it tooo much ? BTW they are going to use 2-10 gal, and 1-20 gal. Rubbermaids.
Also do they need to incubate these ?

Are you casing the popcorn or using it as spawn?
If you are simply casing it, my friend suggests making the substrate no more than 3 or 4 inches deep. How much substrate you put in a single casing depends upon how much you are willing to lose should it contaminate.
If you are using it to spawn bulk, the higher the ration of spawn to bulk you use the faster it will colonize. My friend usually makes a lot of spawn and mixes 1 to 5. Some will say using that much is a waste of spawn, but if you have plenty then what does it matter?

So 1 quart jar to 3 quarts of casing materials?
Could someone elaborate the difference between spawn and casing? Is spawn the grain that the mycellium is growing on? Does subsatrate eventually become spawn then?

No They are talking about using 1 jar to spawn some poo...or straw and poo...or some compost...etc. Good ratio is 5 parts whatever to 1 jar of substrate...faster colonization time. But you can use a 10 to 1 ratio...just takes longer to colonize.

Your Popcorn is your substrate that you use to inoculate something else with....you use the substrate(your jars) to spawn(inoculate) some poo...or straw and poo...or some compost...etc. This would make a bulk substrate.
A casing is putting a casing layer on top of some kind of substrate. Some people confuse the term casing as meaning the container that holds the substrate in...it's not a casing til it has a casing layer on it.
If you are just going to use Popcorn alone...then put a casing layer on it. You will want to have 3" to 4" of popcorn in your container....then 1/2" to 3/4" of a casing layer of 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir on top of the popcorn. This will make it worth your while. Anything less than 3" to 4" is a waste...IMHO I like to use 4" to 6" in my bulk substrates...makes larger fruits.
good luck!
