Yes.

Most of them cause what the medical people refer to as "acute indigestion". Which means nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fun stuff like that. Some of them can be serious enough for you to need to be in the hospital.

If you were thinking of just eating whatever black gilled mushrooms you might find and hoping you won't get poisoned, that's a bad idea. You might get lucky, you might not. Keep in mind that it takes just one bad mushroom among several you eat to make you sick.

I will mention that one species, Hypholoma fasiculare, has caused several deaths in Europe. It's pretty unlikely that anybody would confuse these for any "active" species, but your question suggests that you don't know how to identify mushrooms yet, and are hoping there might be some short cuts.

Picking and eating wild mushrooms is a hobby that can get you dead if you make the wrong mistake. On the positive side, dying is pretty unlikely, but the getting sick can be pretty unpleasant, too. Please play it safe and don't end up in an emergency room.

The only 100% reliable rule is, "if in doubt, throw it out".

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the good information, and I'm not going to eat anything that I don't have 100% indentified. Dont worry!

Ase,

If you follow these simple identification rules for common dung-loving psilocybes, you're going to be safe:-

1. It bruises blue
2. It grows on poo
3. It has grey/brown gills
4. It looks like the photos on the Shroomery

Now I'll probably get blasted for my rather relaxed identification rules, but before anyone does, please give an example of a poisonous mushroom with the above characteristics.

We know that. Just an ID guide that eliminates confusing pyscadelics with poisonous ones.

Only about 26 of the 190 known psychoactive species happen to grow on directly on or in manure,

Sorry that you do not live int he PNW. WE have lawns which can produce 50 to 200 pounds at a time inthe city and int he whole region. In fact they are prolific from San Francisco to British Colombia and fromthe Cascades in the east to the Olympics in the west. We have 18 species here in our region and one some strains of Psilocybe cyanescens can get from 6 to 8 good doses per dried gram. Fresh oounce of P. cyanescens can get from 4 to 20 people high depending on how many shrooms it takes to make the ounce. Four fresh P. cyanescens of this size

Okay, four of those mushrooms above can get four to six people off on a level five trip. They weigh approx. 1 fresh ounce.

They are larger shrooms but not that bog. It takes one fresh ounce of P. cubensis tog et a level 3-5 trip.

Now the baby Psilocybe cyanescens in the image posted below weighed one half a fresh ounce. But there were over 8 doses in this fresh half- ounce,

But then that is nothing,

Sometimes the clumps become clusters if shrooms. Here is a large p. cyanescens Colony on the left and Psilocybe azurescens popping up on the right.

And now a close-up of that cluster on the left in the above photo.

And then there were those azurescens on the tright and they went on

and on

and on

But then that would be another tale of the shroom

yea i know someday ill live in the PNW but sadly it will be a while yet.  and yes cubes aren't that potent but the copes are pretty potented probrobly not as good as cyans tho.  i just realized that the guy that started this thread doesnt have a location in his avatar so our little guide could be useless depending on where he is.  well either way we got to see some kick ass pics
